Intro: How to Put Out a Candle With Magic
There are many ways to put out a candle, one of them is using vinegar and baking soda. This guide is a cool simple trick that will impress your friends and even might you teacher.
STEP 1: Watch Video
STEP 2: Materials
For this project you will need:
Vinegar.
Baking soda.
A glass.
A lighter and a candle.
STEP 3: The Trick
Start by lighting the candle.
Pour some baking soda into a glass.
Pour some vinegar over it (you'll see the reaction happening).
Now turn the glass over the candle without spilling the mixture and see the candle putted out.
STEP 4: Scientific Explanation
1 NaHCO3 + 1 HC2H3O2 → 1 CO2 + 1 H2O + 1 NaC2H3O2
The reaction between the soda and vinegar is acid-base reaction that in this case one of the products is CO2.
Carbon dioxide is a gas that is heavier than air and has no color. This is why when we turn the glass the CO2 is being poured out without our notice, then separating between the flame and the oxygen and causing it to put out.
