Intro: Indian Masala Chai

How to make an Indian masala chai used to spice up your old boring tea. This is a fantastic original gift for a loved one during the cold winter months that won't break your wallet.

STEP 1: Supplies

8 - 2 inch cinnamon sticks

80 cardamom pods

40 cloves

1 Tbsp peppercorns

1 lg pinch of saffron

2 tsp. ground nutmeg

1 inch of fresh ginger

1 cup of milk

1 black tea bag in hot water

1 tsp of honey

mixing bowl & spoon

STEP 2: Cinnamon

Using the mortar and pestle, break down the cinnamon sticks into manageable pieces. Transfer to a small mixing bowl.

STEP 3: Cardamom

Again using the mortar and pestle, lightly break open the cardamom shells and remove the seeds from the inside. Don't crush the seeds yet. Transfer to mixing bowl.

STEP 4: Cloves, Pepper Yadda Yadda Yadda....

Add the cloves, peppercorns and saffron to the mixing bowl. Stir together.

STEP 5: Nutmeg

Take your rasp and grate approximately 2 tsp worth of fresh nutmeg. Mix together then package that baby up. You're done!

STEP 6: Let's Brew!

Take one large spoonful of your Masala Chai and either crush it down finely in your mortar and pestle or grind it up in a coffee grinder.

STEP 7: Ginger

Cut off a chunk of ginger, peel it and chop it into large chunks. Place the ginger and spices in a pan with the milk and simmer.

STEP 8: Tea

Brew your teabag in boiling water. Leaving half to 1/4 of the mug empty. Now pour in the fragrant milk. Add a spoonful of honey and drink.

Thanks. Feel free to play with the ingredient amounts, I tend to overdo it a bit. I like chai with a bit of an afterburn.

Yea! Your chai i'ble looks really good. I'll have to try it. That is what is great about chai.... it's always good regardless of recipe. I particularly love fresh ginger as opposed to powdered.
