Leather and Paracord Bicycle Grips.
Intro: Leather and Paracord Bicycle Grips.
If you have the good taste of riding bike you must know that the grips are an important part of the Bike. You can add a Vintage touch and give your bike that Good old Style.
Surfing the web I found some nice leather grips but there are so expensive, so I thought why dont make them myself ?. So this is a last minute project be gentle and please let me know your thoughts.
STEP 1: Stuff and Tools.
One big issue its where to find Leather, so you dont have to buy a half of a Cow, Try upcycling those old leather Boots.
One Bicycle handle bar without grips.
Two pieces of leather of 12 cm x 8cms.
Hammer.
Leather punch tool.
2 meters of thin Paracord. One for each Grip.
Ruler.
Sharpie.
Cutter.
Pointed pliers.
Lighter.
Two wine corks.
STEP 2: Cut, Perfore and Weave.
Once you had the two pieces of leather dip it in water for two hours, then trace a line along the piece and mark small dots each 5 milimeters, then punch 12 holes en each side.
Wrap the handle bar tube and start to tie strongly the Grip, Finnaly tie together the points of the remaining paracord, and put them inside the tube covering with the corks.
That´s all Nice and easy. !!

where do you get leather? all i can find is like half or a quarter of a cow and thats way too much and way too much money. Do you know of a place to get smaller pieces of leather? (i'm UK)

try looking online, plenty of companies will sell scraps. Also head to local furniture stores or anywhere you acn find that it is made, they will probably sell you scraps as well.

People are always looking for scraps of leather for craft work, buy a larger piece then sell the rest on an auction site. You might even sell the rest for what you paid for it.

Those two leather pieces are from a pair of work Boots. Try upcycling some leather, maybe a purse , jacket. Good luck on your quest.

If you do this for a child's bike, leave the cord dangling and thread some beads on it for decoration. You could also tie on a squirrel tail or fake fur. Dress it up a little!

Gracias Mario. No es tanto por los premios sino para justificar la existencia de Colombia en la lista Élite.Claro que esa Bici no caería mal.

Nice work, Mr. Sanchez! Very inspiring! I've been looking for unique grips for my rat rod bicycle project. I have suddenly become a silent danger to everything made of leather in my household... it may come down to a choice between my old smelly work boots and my darling wife's handbag...not much of a choice, is it, if I want to stay married?

Dude, for Christ´s sake wash those Boots !! Keep a long distance between your wife´s handbag. You know what ?? Ladies loves Brand new Shoes...not for much time.
Good luck on your quest.

When I make those style of grips, I always place the laced up part, towards the front of the handlebar, so it rides in the middle of my fingers, really comfy. I almost always repurpose leather for these, that way there's no breaking them in. Good job Mr. Sanchez.

Well, this is the first time that I made one of these. I apologize with all the leather workers if something is wrong in the making of these, In fact I didn´t do the research, I just Cut, perfore and weave. Anyway it fits perfectly in my needs. Thnks for the comment . Let me know if I could Improve my technique for future jobs.

I like the individuality of this, I think it's the answer I seek for handle bars that tend to be too thin for my XXL Hands. I have already archived the information for future need.

I´m glad to hear that. Indeed you could cover the whole handlebar. Let me know when you finish your grips.Thnks for your kind comment.
