Intro: Make Your Own Fire Place Starters

This is a simple and cheap gift idea for anyone with a fire place or outdoor fire pit.

All you need is:
News paper
Lint from your dryer
Hemp
Pine cones

Optional:
Dried herbs (I used dried orange peel & whole cloves)

STEP 1:

Take one full sheet of news paper and on one corner add 2 pine cones. In between the pine cones add a small chunk of lint. Sprinkle on a teaspoon of the dried herbs (unless you are opting out of the herbs)

STEP 2:

Now you are going to burrito wrap the pine cones. If you don't know how to do that... do this:

1. Fold bottom corner over pine cones and stuff.
2. Roll once so everything is just covered.
3. Fold in the left corner.
4. Roll once more.
5. Fold in the right corner.
6. Roll all the way up!

STEP 3:

Now, to help hold everything in, take a half sheet of news paper and roll the first package up again. Twist the ends and secure with a piece of hemp.

Then, when you are ready for a fire, stack your logs and place this somewhere in between the logs. The paper and lint act as a quick light while the pine cones act as kindling. The herbs are purely for scent.

Aw, dagnabbit, I was reading that! You might let folks know the ingredient is "hemp twine"... out here "hemp" means a different product.  Good 'Able! I will be using this for our Yule logs!

I gotta love this! Ive been acing dryer lint for years (wow that sounds a little sicko), and making our fire starters here. I wrap some of the lint deep into the pine cone the. Dip it in wax so the pine ones integrity is kept. Since we only get to use our fireplace a few times a year, I can keep them in a basket sitting on the fire dog and they look kind of pretty there. They seem to keep for years too.
I love how your look like Chinese part favors tho. I am going to have to try your way. Mine tend to collect tons of dust.

Awesome!!! My husband always bring TONS of wood with us on camping trips to start campfires! I will definitely print this and share with my husband!! This is best ever because we will definitely love the smell of pinecones as well as herb! THANKS for sharing!!!

Cedar Chips are another great addition and are potent enough so guests arriving to your home will smell it. We've done it on holidays for years.

You could use cotton rope, pretty much anything rope like that isn't treated with any chemicals.

Hemp does not contain significant amounts of THC. it is related to Marijuana but they breed it for the fiber not THC. Though if it did that would certainly make for an interesting experience near the fire!

Great Idea! I think I may actually use this. how does it compare to store bought with your "ingredients" ?

to tell you the truth, I don't know! I personally don't have a fireplace so I'm unable to do a comparison. :(
