I mentioned in my last instructable that I have been playing a fair bit of Mass Effect lately.  One part of the game that I like is chatting with your squad mates on the Normandy, they are really great characters and since some of them are aliens, they look really cool too. While playing the game I've often thought about crocheting some of these squad mates.  Since I had the perfect colour of blue yarn already, I decided to start with Liara T'Soni, the Asari scientist.  Along with her I made Glyph, her VI info drone.  Liara can hold Glyph in her arms (with the aid of some velcro) and he can light up with a small LED.

STEP 1: What You Will Need

Yarn weight 4:

• Blue
• White
• Grey
• Black

Other:

• 2.25mm crochet hook
• Yarn needles
• Blue embroidery thread
• Polyfil/fibrefil stuffing of some sort
• Blue, light blue, grey, black and white felt
• Velcro
• Small LED light with switch and battery (I found these LED push pins at a dollar store which have the LED, battery and switch all in one small package -they are great for adding a light to these types of projects)

STEP 2: Head

With blue yarn

Rnd1: Magic Circle 6

Rnd2: 2sc in sc 12st(s)

Rnd3: *2sc in sc, sc, repeat from * -18st(s)

Rnd4: *2sc in sc, sc, sc, repeat from * -24st(s)

Rnd5: *2sc in sc, sc, sc, sc repeat from * -30st(s)

Rnd6: *2sc in sc, sc, sc, sc, sc repeat from * -36st(s)

Rnd7-16: sc in sc, -36st(s)

Rnd17: *sc2tog, sc, sc, sc, sc repeat -30st(s)

Rnd18: *sc2tog, sc, sc, sc, repeat -24st(s)

Rnd19: *sc2tog, sc, sc, repeat -18st(s)

Rnd20: *sc2tog, sc, repeat -12st(s) Now is a good time to stuff.

Rnd21: sc2tog in rest

Fasten off. Leave tail.

STEP 3: Crest

With blue yarn, make 6.

Rnd1: ch(s)12, sl st in first, -12st(s)

Rnd2-3: sc in sc -12st(s)

Rnd4: sc2tog first two, sc in rest -11st(s)

Rnd5-14: continue sc2tog first two, sc in rest in each row until 1st left

Fasten off. Weave in end and stuff.

STEP 4: Torso

With white yarn

Rnd1: Magic Circle 6

Rnd2: 2sc in sc -12st(s)

Rnd3: *2sc in sc, sc, repeat from * -18st(s)

Rnd4: *2sc in sc, sc, sc, repeat from * -24st(s)

Rnd5-12: sc in sc -24st(s)

Rnd13: *2sc in sc, sc, sc, sc repeat from * -30st(s)

Rnd14: sc in sc, 30st(s)

Rnd15: *2sc in sc, sc, sc, sc, sc repeat from * -36st(s)

Rnd16-18: sc in sc, -36st(s)

STEP 5: Feet

With grey yarn, make 2.

Rnd5-6: sc in sc, -24st(s)

Fasten off. Leave tail.

STEP 6: Legs

*Note: I ended up making the legs shorter than those that appear in the photo, I originally had the grey and black portion the same size.  I thought that they were too long so I shortened the grey part of the legs to 3 rounds instead of 5, the pattern will reflect this.

Starting with black yarn, make 2.

Rnd1: Magic Circle 4

Rnd2: 2sc in sc -8st(s)

Rnd3: 2sc in first, sc, sc, sc, 2sc in next, sc, sc, sc -10st(s)

Rnd4-7: sc in sc -10st(s)

Switch to grey yarn

Rnd8-10: sc in sc -10st(s)

Rnd11: sc2tog in first, sc, sc, sc, sc2tog in next, sc, sc, sc -8st(s) Stuff.

Rnd12: sc2tog in each

Fasten off, Leave tail.

STEP 7: Arms

With grey yarn, make 2.

Rnd1: Magic Circle 4

Rnd2: 2sc in sc -8st(s)

Rnd3-4: sc in sc -8st(s)

Switch to white yarn

Rnd5-12: sc in sc, -8st(s)

Stuff it. Fasten off. Leave tail.

STEP 8: Coat and Leg Armor

Coat

With white yarn

Row1: chs 25,turn -25st(s)

Row2: sc in each chs,  ch1, turn -24st(s)

Row3: sl st in first 2 sc, sc in next 18 sc, ch1, turn -18st(s)

Row4-8: sc in sc, ch1, turn -18st(s)

Row9: 2sc in first 3 sc, and last 3, sc in rest, ch1, turn -24st(s)

Row10: sc in sc, ch1, turn -24st(s)

Row11: 2sc in first 3 sc, and last 3, sc in rest, ch1, turn -30st(s)

Row12: sc in sc, ch1, turn -30st(s)

Row13: 2sc in first 3 sc, and last 3, sc in rest, ch1, turn -36st(s)

Row14: sc in sc, ch1, turn -36st(s)


Leg armor

With white yarn, make 2

Row1: 6ch(s), turn -5st(s)

Row2: sc in each ch, ch1, turn -5st(s)

Row3-11: sc in sc, ch1, turn -5st(s)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.


With blue embroidery thread stitch along the edge of the coat and leg armor to simulate piping.

STEP 9: Finish the Body

• I cut out a few thin pieces of blue felt for the straps on Liara's coat the top two pieces I glued on.
• For lower one, the belt, I wove it through the crochet holes in the coat. I also added the small grey squarish piece at the back.
• Once the coat was finished I sewed it onto the torso with regular sewing thread.  I left the areas below the belt unsewn, so that the coat can be folded back to fit the legs. 
• I then sewed on the arms. 

STEP 10: Legs and Feet

• I wrapped the armor around the legs and stitched it on with blue embroidery thread so that it looks like straps
• Sew the feet to the legs
• Sew the legs to the torso. The legs were arranged so that Liara is in a seated position.
• I then sewed a small piece of velcro (hook side) to Liara's hands so that she can hold Glyph.

STEP 11: Finish Head

I sewed on the head crests starting form the centre of the head and working out so that the were symmetrical, three on each side.  They should come to roughly midway down the head and all should point back.  I pulled them back and used thread to tie them back so that it looks like a proper Asari head.

STEP 12: Face

Nose with blue yarn

Rnd 1: Magic circle 4
Rnd2: sc in sc -4sts
Fasten off. Leave tail.

I created the eyes with blue, black and white felt and glued them on.  I made knots with grey yarn for the freckles. I then sewed the nose to the face.  I was going to make a mouth with embroidery thread but I just couldn't get it to look right.  Once the face was done I sewed the head onto the torso.

STEP 13: Glyph

With white yarn

Rnd1: Magic circle 5

Rnd2: 2sc in first 4 sc , 3sc in last -11st(s)

Rnd3: 2sc, sc, sc , 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc -16st(s)

Rnd4: sc, sc, 2sc, sc, sc, sc, 2sc, sc, sc, sc, 2sc, sc, sc, sc, 2sc, sc -20 st(s)

Rnd5: sc in first 7 sc, 2sc, sc in next 9 sc, 2sc, sc in next 2 sc -22 st(s)

Rnd6: sc, sc, 2sc, sc in next 10 sc, 2sc, sc in last 8 sc  -24 st(s)

Rnd7:  sc in sc -24st(s)

Rnd8: sc in next 7, sc2tog, sc in next 10, sc2tog, sc in next 3 -20 st(s)

Rnd9: sc in next 3, sc2tog, sc in next 9 sc2tog, sc in next 6 -16 st(s)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Place the light inside and put the stuffing around it.  Cut out pieces of felt like in image 5 and glue onto the crochet ball.  Don't forget the little bow tie, which I attached with some thread.

What dollar store did you find the pins at? In a multipack, no less! The only ones I can find online are roughly $6 for one pin. :(

Wow, I didn't look closely at that, I thought it was $6 for a 5 pack which is about what I paid. I bought mine at Dollarama which is in Canada. I found a link with a better price:
