In this instructable I will show you how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich. Mmm, yummy, I love me some grilled cheese! I had a request to make this sandwich, which was perfect because I was so in the mood for one, well let's be honest, when am I not in the mood for grilled cheese sandwiches....haha. This sandwich is super duper easy to make, if I can make it you can make it, let's get started. :)

Don't forget to follow me and check out my other instructables!

If you have any questions, comments, or requests leave them down below and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Follow the easy steps or watch the short video tutorial or do both! :)

STEP 1: Ingredients/Tools

Print the recipe here if you like.

Ingredients:

  • Bread (use your favorite kind of bread)
  • Cheese (simple, use your favorite kind of cheese, I LOVE mild cheddar, but sometimes do a mix of cheddar and jack or mozzarella.)
  • Butter (love me some butter. But you can use a fake butter if you want. :))

Tools:

  • Skillet
  • Spatula
  • Butter knife

STEP 2: Bread, Butter, and Cheese

First, let's get our skillet on the stovetop on medium heat. Now we need our bread. The type of bread is totally up to you, I am using a "Texas Toast" style bread for mine. You can use whole wheat, french bread, sourdough, etc. Then generously spread on your softened butter. mmmm butter. Or you can use any butter substitute spread if you like. Even spraying it with olive oil will do the trick. Then we need to slice up some cheese or you can shred the cheese. Again, use whatever cheese you like. I love a good mild cheddar.

STEP 3: Place and Cook

Now place one slice butter side down onto your skillet. Then place your cheese on top. Then put the other slice butter side up. Now cook that side for a few minutes until it gets nice and golden brown.

STEP 4: Flip, Cook, and Serve

Now flip it over. Wow look how nice and golden brown it is. Then cook that side. Once done, transfer to a plate and serve! :) Mmmm yummy!

STEP 5: Video Tutorial

Now watch those steps in action by checking out my video tutorial. :)

You should look into Cutco cutlery. They make for much cleaner slicing/spreading/etc for a minimum of mess and crumbs and very little waste. Look for a representative in your phone book or go to Cutco.com online.

I used to sell it almost fifty years ago and still swear by it. What used to be referred to as a Lifetime Guarantee is now called a Forever Guarantee. You can, literally, pass these knives in your will and the guarantee goes with them. I recently bought a fishing knife oa a local auction that was as old as the one I had dropped overboard a few years ago. It had the patented edge so needed to be sent off for sharpening. as per the Forever Guarantee, Ionly paid shipping and got it back sharpened and polished nicely.

Think about it.

I don't have to think about it. I already own several Cutco knives. haha, and love them! :) By the way though that bread knife I used in the video is a Japanese brand (a 200 dollar knife, and is also very very good)

Lightly salt the buttered outsides! Also a sprinkling of pepper inside is good. And I keep the pan covered for the few minutes it is grilling because it traps the heat & helps melt the cheese inside.

If you use salted butter, no need to add the extra salt. Unless you like it salty haha these sandwiches are pretty versatile, not really a wrong way to make them.

Hello, this is my first attempt! (please don't be too judgy). I fried them with margarine and used yellow American cheese, at the end I found them a little bit salty, but I believe this can be fixed if I use a little bit less salty cheese (white cheese, maybe). Enjoy!

Looks great! they can be less salty if you use like a unsalted butter. and yes a less salty cheese as well. :)

Grilled cheese sandwiches are a family favorite here (Alaska), too. They're great alone, but superb with tomato soup! Oh, yum! Growing up in the Catskills backwoods of upstate NY, we called them toasted cheese sandwiches. My current favorite is horseradish cheddar. Pictures, etc. are attached:

1. Always begin with clean hands - Soap and warm, running water.

2. Current favorite - horseradish cheddar cheese. Disregard this picture. The horseradish cheese label is #9.

3. Butter one side of each slice. Turn top slice upsidedown on bottom slice (buttered sides are together). Arrange sliced cheese on top slice.

4. Pick up top (cheesed) slice and lay it down on the heating pan. Place the other slice, buttered side up, on top of the bottom slice; the cheese is now in the middle.

5. Watch the bottom slice. When it is browned to taste, flip whole sandwich over with a plastic spatula.

6. When the top slice, too, is evenly browned, transfer to pretty plate.

7. (Say the blessing, if that is your custom); enjoy your sandwich! Oh, yum! Going, going...

8. Almost gone! That was so good, I think I'll go make another one!

We often fry thin onion slices for in our grilled cheese. I'll also add ham slices - which requires two layers of cheese to make sure everything sticks together. The other tip I'll mention is that I'll use a glass pan lid (I have a few around) to help hold in the heat to melt the cheese even more - and the glass lets you see to make sure it's not burning.

Grilled cheese is a staple food in our house.

Yeah I have done ham many times, and bacon, I love putting bacon in there, and then I will put cheese on both sides as well. yummy.

By the way, that looks delicious!

I know that this question may seem silly, but, do you think that I can achieve a similar result with a microwave oven? What would you change in order to cook that in microwave? Thank you.

You could toast the bread and then melt the cheese onto the toast with the microwave. I make toasted tuna melts this way.

Bread in the microwave becomes tough and chewy and will not brown. Yuck!

No it isn't a silly question, you won't get the same result no. But the cheese will melt. My roommate in college made them all the time that way. I would experiment. Try it with just bread and cheese, then try buttering the bread as well. experimentation is great. although in my opinion it will turn out better on the stove.

Garlic powder. Just a light sprinkling.

Other than that, I use the same exact method.

I put garlic powder in everything I can. All of these variations - now I'm hungry. I'm going to make a grilled cheese bucket list tonight and start crossing it off.

I like mine with sliced green New Mexico chiles grilled right on the cheese!
