Intro: Popcorn Costume

This is my 5 year old son, Jason.
He just LOVES popcorn!

We decided to do a low-cost, do-it-yourself costume for 2012.  This costume cost was approx. $25!

1 Cardboard Box
1 Yard of Striped Material (buy on sale!)
1 Round Wood Medallion (craft store)
1 Red & 1 White Acrylic Paint Pen/Marker (craft store)
1 String of Battery-Operated LED lights (craft store)
1 Can of "Great Stuff" (Home Depot or Lowes)
Hot Glue Gun

The box was cut and formed into the shape of our liking.  We sized up the material and hot glued it to the box.  The wooden medallion was painted with a "popcorn" logo and glued onto the box.  The LEDs were strung from the inside and hot glued around the medallion.  The popcorn was made by wrapping cylinder objects with saram wrap (we used Clorox wipe containers!) and sprayed "X's" onto them.  If you pop them off, they appear just like popcorn!  They are then glued onto the box randomly.  Jason is dressed in an existing red top and pants set that he had in his closet.  This is a super-easy costume to make (total construction time was ONLY 5 hours done over a 2 week period after school).  The cost was kept low by using printable online coupons.

I'm going to one costume party and i'ts gonna be a LOT of people
It's gonna be crowded and i think it's going to be very hard to move through with that cardboard box.

Do you have any advice on the box for adults?
It doesn't have to be a box, but what else do you think i can make instead?

This is an awesome idea! Thanks for the popcorn making method : my son costume was an instant success everywhere he went yesterday!

I made the "box" as a "sandwich man" flaps so it fits over the clothes (Halloween night is cold in Montreal!) but the popcorn themselves are what instantly get people's attention!

I tried different sizes for the "mold" : the toilet paper roll cut in half with saran wrap on top is the best.

Hi Donna,
On the side. Any large cylinder object will do. Simply wrap in Saran Wrap and spray "X's"... It'll give you a curved "x" that when dry will soon resemble the popcorn kernal. Once dry, spray a goofball size bit in the middle of the "x." You will soon see your kernels come to life!

I really like the popcorn, but I don't understand your description of "sprayed "X's" onto them", can you elaborate?

Absolutely! If you use a cylinder shaped object and wrap it in Saran Wrap (we used the household Clorox wipes containers), you can spray the "great stuff" in the shape of "X's". The Saran Wrap allows the "great stuff" to pop off, resembling popcorn kernels! We did about 30 of them and glued them onto the box.
