Intro: Sew Felt and Cotton Quilt Square Coasters!

These coasters are wonderful - nice and chunky and absorbent because of the felt, and super easy to put together.

I've chosen to sew them using an overlock foot - it gives you serger quality stitches on your sewing machine. :) But you could also assemble them using a blanket stitch!

STEP 1: What You'll Need:

For a set of four coasters:
  • 4 - 4x4 inch squares quilting cotton
  • 4 - 4x4 inch squares felt
  • sewing machine or embroidery floss and needle
  • overlock foot for machine

STEP 2: The Overlock Foot.

An overlock foot is fantastic - you can sew knits easily with it, and use it for edging on other projects.

All you have to do is install it on your sewing machine, butt the fabric up against the right edge of the foot, choose an appropriate stitch (like #7 in the second photo) and sew!

STEP 3: Sew!

Put your pieces of felt and cotton together wrong sides facing. I normally don't pin when sewing by machine, but if you're going to be hand sewing them, you should pin!

Run each side through the machine, trimming all the thread ends as you go. :)

STEP 4: Make Tons of Them!

These make great gifts because they're so easy to put together and they're so useful. :D

Great idea Jessy! Thanks for sharing.
I love it, I'll have to buy myself a new foot for my machine. I had been just using my regular foot for this, which is a complicated maneuver. :) It never struck me to get an overlock foot.
My new machine came with one, and I think I'm in love!
