Intro: Homemade Steampunk Paintball Gun

An updated version of my last gun, it's a lot more compact and easier to hold and fire, along with having all these smashing features:

Breech loading bolt.

Single spring actuated ball valve.

Pistol grip with two stage trigger with removable safety.

Fully functioning adjustable rear sight.

360 fps muzzle velocity with a 68 cal paintball.

It's not intended to be used in matches but it was great fun to build, and pretty nice to shoot! 

(also it says on the pictures "05/10/2006" it wasn't actually taken then, my camera c**cked up the previous day and so reset it's date.)

Well it was quite a while ago, but I'll give it shot.

The framework, and essential gas containing components were made using standard pvc-welded joints.

The rest of the features, 'stock' grips and such were made out of pvc that I used a heat gun to soften, then mould into the correct shapes, holes and slots where done with a drill and a file (and tin snips to cut out the larger areas) and then I hot-welded the non-structral pieces (melting and fusing them together, rather than using a filler material) together using a tip of a hot glue gun, which holds them really quite tight, even to this day the thing is still intact and looking as good as it did back then. (there are plenty of more detailed instructions on pvc moulding etc on Instructables if you want to search around for them)

With regards to the mechanism, that was made fairly rag-tag out of bits that I just had around, a sawed off part of an old bike is the bolt, and some cut and moulded pvc for the trigger, as long as it serves the basic function it doesn't really matter what it is, or used to be.

Nice exterior but what about the inner workings? Just mentioning the parts doesn't really help that much. If you don't want to take it back apart to show how it works, how bout a drawing or two?

Sorry for the crudely drawn paint diagram, but it shows the basic principals for how the gun's key internal 'sear mechanism' works.
Attached to the running bolt (the grey bit) is a bolt handle, which is connected to a ball valve via a piece of cable, the bolt is cocked prior to firing (cocking consisting of pulling the bolt back until it latches onto the sear) and the ball valve is closed.

The breech is opened via a small hatchway opened by retracting another bolt (the breech bolt) on the barrel, and whatever you are going to fire is loaded in, after that the bolt is closed and the gun is pressurised. The final stage is firing, the sight for the gun can be adjusted by moving a small screw on the sight, which adjusts elevation, so fine tuning is possible (albeit not very necessary on a smoothbore gun) once you are ready to fire, the safety (consisting of a small removable steel that stops the sear moving back) - is removed and the trigger is pulled, the movement of the trigger moving is then transferred to the sear which rotates (shown in diagram) so that the running bolt is released and is forced forward with high speed, pulling on the cable opening the ball valve and discharging the gun.

Iam not fully sure but this gentleman posted another instructable ( https://www.instructables.com/id/Home-made-Paintball-Gun-Metal-Denting-1/ ) in there he pressurizes a pvc pipe using a bike pump. On that page he also mentions making the final version and posting a picture to this instructable. So my guess is he used the same methods as shown in the posted link to make this shoot. He uses a ball valved connected to s spring loaded trigger system. Since a human wouldnt be able to twist the ball valve fast enough to allow for a even and full force to be applied to the ball. So to answer your questions there's a pressure chamber in the stock of the gun that is pressurized by using a bike tire pump. (atleast thats what Iam lead to believe by his other instructable.) I would think one would be able to make a spring loaded/airtight piston (similar to spring loaded airsoft rifles) that would achieve similar results by pulling back a spring loaded chamber. When released it would force all the air down the barrel propelling the paintball.

'speed fit' pvc plumbing pipe, In the UK there is a size of it which has an inner diameter pretty much identical to the size of a .68 cal paintball,
