Intro: Straw Horn

This is a simple Instructable on how to make a straw whistle.

STEP 1: Cut the Straw

Cut the straw however long you want. It should be at least 4 inches though. The longer the straw, the lower pitched the sound is.

STEP 2: Cut Again

Next, cut edges off about 1 cm down from the tip of the straw. Cut the edges at about a 45 degree angle.

STEP 3: Hold It Down

Hold the end of the straw with your fingers really tightly until the tips are about 2 mm apart. This may take a while.

STEP 4: BLOW!

Blow into the end that you held down now. It will make a funny noise!

You can also make the end pointy like this or you could launch darts through it.

ps darts are made from shoelace needles andtape

Cool! I make this too - only I call it a Straw Oboe and use it to teach my students about wavelength and pitch. I do a funny demonstration involving blowing on the oboe at full length, and then cutting snips off of the bottom in quick succession to show the effect on tube length on pitch. The kids think it's hilarious, and then we all make straw oboes and the other teachers hate me for two full weeks afterward. *sigh* good times... (-:
wow, it only took almost a year for someone to laugh at that one! (-;
I also think that is hilarious.  :)  I was planning to share this with the science teacher I work with, but then I realized my kiddos would be tooting on these things for the next 3 weeks...

Maybe it's worth the sacrifice!
Have you thought of using two different sizes of straw, one inside the other? It takes a little prep, but the McDonalds straws fit over most other straws.
Cool idea. I might try this out, it's so easy.
