- jtobako commented on kscout283's instructable Lathe Bowl ChuckView Instructable »
Put a disk of plywood behind the metal strapping. Cut some slots in the center for the bolts to pass through small enough that the straps hold the plywood down. put a second set of slots on the outside edge to hold the ends of the straps down. (slots, not holes, so that you can adjust the clamps with the 3-jaw chuck. narrow so that the bolting action holds the disk to the chuck)I think you are going to find that any pressure on the bowl is going to bend the straps and throw the bowl across the room. probably not with the size that you have chucked up, but using any of the other holes would be a problem.

"...re-temper up to HARD before welding..." so, get it the right hardness and then...heat it with welding? Why bother with the tempering if you are going to ruin the temper by welding? (I use the edges of the anvil constantly, and a soft edge when trying to shape anything but flat would be a nightmare.)
- jtobako commented on gravityisweak's instructable Coat Hanger Drill BitView Instructable »
Metal fatigue causes hardness and brittleness. Hardness means it won't bend, but metal fatigue is caused by bending. Try bending a coat hanger wire until it breaks - not so easy is it? You had to find a pre-stressed area (like the hook area where the wire is bent suddenly) didn't you? or hold the wire in a pair of pliers so that you could get a sharp bend, Hmmm? Not saying it didn't happen to your dad, but i'm not saying that manufacturing techniques haven't changed in the last 40+ years either...

..measured in cubic millimeters per minute...very difficult to cast at that volume : )
View Instructable »Cans have a LOT of slag in them when you try to ;melt them. Try squeezing the blob of slag against the side of the crucible to push out as much liquid metal as you can. Better sources of metal are old aluminum furniture, tubing, cast engine parts, parts of old hard drives or heat sinks off electronics. Best is if you can get castings to melt down because the alloy is created to cast very well where cans are almost pure aluminum and are softer when made into something else.

you need to put some kind of resistance between the battery and the plug. Old way of doing it was a light bulb in series so the power goes through the bulb. Look at the cranking amps of the battery - you are putting all that (200-400 amps) through the short circuit that is the glow plug.

Epoxy, but thin stuff so you don't have to deal with bubbles, which means you do have to worry about holding it in place so it doesn't sink. There is a 'fake water' epoxy that is clear. Usually sold in big craft stores for floral displays.I saw a display of a beer bottle in the process of exploding (steampunk time stop experiment). He used clear gel beads and water, carefully placing each piece as he filled the jar.

If I've seen bigfoot and never been arrested, is that causality or coincidence? In the 1920's with only late stage cancer being treated, yes the success rate was tiny. With some lymphomas, the success rate is tiny. looking at more modern and overall figures are closer to 60%.bronchitis is difficult to treat with blood delivered antibiotics for the same reasons as ear infections - there isn't any contact between the source and the infection. Do you expect antibiotics to treat dandruff? why do you think the silver worked? posibly because it's poisonous and killed the bacteria by contact?

You are going to need something like 60 amps to get much for gas. Anything over 3 volts just creates heat (and steam) and wastes power (electricity and the flame being cooled by the water vapor). Cheaper and easier to use the electric power to make an electrical kiln.

sounds extraordinarily uncomfortable, like walking in downhill ski boots. Wouldn't it be better to adjust to top area with a more controlled and localized lacing structure? you could still use the heel to contain the controls, you just need to provide channels for the laces in the sole area so the channels are semi rigid and don't pull the sides (rather than the top) tight.

Sounds like a science lab : )The steel becomes brittle, but harder - you may want to try a scratch test with a file (glass is usually to hard). Show that annealed metal is softer (heat to red and let cool) and that it can be hardened again. If you take and harden the steel, remove the black iron oxide with sandpaper, then heat until you get a rainbow of colors on the steel (test the particular steel, not all show the colors well) with different hardness as the color changes.
