Summer Heart T Shirt

Intro: Summer Heart T Shirt

The T-shirt challenge has inspired me to work with knits.  My new daughter-in-law loves knits.  I was disappointed when I heard this,  because I usually work with cottons and wanted to sew her some fashionable clothes.  I am so glad this contest was going on when my kids were visiting.  I have learned that knits are great fun to work with.  We found this t-shirt on clearance and decided to add some color to it to make it stand out. This instructable will show you how we accomplished this.

STEP 1: Supplies

2 Contrasting knit t-shirts;  one  with a large heart and one plain
Contrasting thread
Marker
Sewing pins
Straight edge
Scissors
Puff paint optional
Sewing machine or could easily be stitched by hand

STEP 2: Marking the T-shirt Lines

Mark The stripes using a straight edge and marker.
Cut the lines.
Go back and cut uneven cuts along the trimmed edges as shown.

STEP 3: Cut Square From Contrasting T-shirt

Cut the contrasting fabric into a square shape at least 3 inches larger than the heart .

Please note:  The paper heart is shown just for illustration purposes only.

STEP 4: Pinning

We pulled the t-shirt slightly so the lines would separate before we pinned the red fabric to the t-shirt.
Smooth out the red fabric and pin it to the t-shirt through all layers.

STEP 5: Sewing Heart Outline

Machine stitch or hand sew the outline of the heart through the layers as shown.

STEP 6: Trimming the Insert

Turn the t-shirt wrong side out.
Very carefully trim the heart shape (using the stitching lines of the heart shape; as a guide) to  remove excess fabric.
Please note: I forgot to take  a picture before the lines were sewn.

STEP 7: Sewing the Lines

Sew the middle of the lines of the cut stripes as shown.

STEP 8: Adding Detail

We decided to add some detail by coloring the arrow with red and black detail using a black marker and puff paint.

STEP 9: Sunshiine's Final Thoughts

My daughter-in-law and I had a lot of fun creating this t-shirt.  After making just one of these t-shirts we have thought of different uses that we will post soon.  We both loved the red contrast of the heart.

In closing I would like to thank  our instructables company, sponsors,  authors, readers, and members, for making this community a great success!  Many hours of time and hard work has been put into making this place the best DIY on the Internet. Have a splendorous day!

Brings to mind an old art saying that I've heard, "Sometimes it's not what you add to the canvas but what you take away."

Very cool!
Thanks for commenting! Stay cool!
