Intro: The IPillow

Ever had the problem of wanting to listen to music while in bed but don't like the inconvenience of headphones or getting tangled in cord if you fall asleep? If so then this is the Instructable for you.

STEP 1: Gather Materials

Needed Materials:
-Headphones/small speakers
-Material (i used felt)
-Glue
-Thread

Needed Tools:
-Marker
-Scissors
-Sewing Machine
-Hot glue gun

STEP 2: Outline What Type of Shape You Want

I did a Head Test to get a rough indication of where the speakers would be.

Then i drew my idea onto the bit of felt. The one pictured is by no means perfect so feel free to change it around. Basically it's divided into 4 compartments; 1 for each speaker, 1 for the bunch of extra wire and another for the cord to pass through

STEP 3: Cutting

Cut out your design (this one will be the bottom) and then use it as a template for the other (this is the top). Simple!

STEP 4: 1st Bit of Sewing

Sew the bottom, both ends and half of the middle ones. This is because there has to be a gap left for the cords to pass through.

STEP 5: Glue Stage

Glue both speaker to roughly the middle of each of their sections. Then bundle the excess cord (i had a bit) and glue it together and to the middle of it's section. You also might want to glue the cord that passes through the sewed line for ease of sewing later.

STEP 6: More Sewing and Stuffing

Sew the other ends leaving a gap for the hole or the cord to pass.
Then stuff each section with stuffing to your liking. I like it soft

STEP 7: Last Bit of Sewing

Now sew the top together and don't forget to leave yet another gap for the cord to pass through.
Then sew the top section together and you're nearly done

STEP 8: Last Bit

Now tidy it up by cutting off the scrappy bits and loose bits of thread.
I also decided to attach some safety pins to each end so i could pin it to my pillow

STEP 9: Using It

i pinned it to my pillow to stop it moving around.
Now you can rock out while catching 40 (or more) winks!

I'm thinking if you wanted to make a stationary version you'll never move get some cheap speakers 2inch from radio shack or from the salvation army (seen a set of pioneer speakers go for 2.99 each get a hard foam cut out the peach you will replace the speaker into place speaker cover with soft thin pillow or cotton cushioning (hobby lobby is great with this stuff) cut some old head phone wires so that you keep the jack wire up the speakers so you don't shock your self heat shrink the wires prior to closing the whole thing up by some fabric for the size of the pillow you will be sleeping on cover the pillow with it and sew shut i'm sure this way you could make one for you and your significant other my only snag thinking about this is if you will have enough power to run it

I made something similar using Radio $hack components and 2 sets of clip on headphones. Last Christmas they had "Clipz" headphones for $2.95 a set. I bought a few for future projects. Then used a mini-amp/splitter that uses a AA battery (OK, played in a band when I was a kid; Marshall stack right next to right ear). I bought a cheap very firm pillow and sliced it open and performed steps as above. Works pretty well for me.

Great instructions! My friend listens to his music with his headphone in one of his ears, and now he has lost some of his hearing in that ear. This is a great idea for those who do not want to risk potential hearing issues.

I found that after around 3 years of apple ear-buds in my ears i had a decreased level of hearing, not that noticeable but i'd was saying "what" and "pardon" i whole lot more. i swapped to the big old school ones and in a couple of months i've seen a noticeable improvement

I have a pillow speaker. It's just a flat speaker I put under my pillow, but this is another method I guess...

Just to leave an idea. Is there any 'soft' or less harsh methods of producing buttons for a plushy surface. I though that a piece of silk would work, but I would have to add cotton stuffing before the photocells I plan to use. I am not sure if layering it will work. I fear I might roll over and crush it, or worse, pump up the volume.

There are 'ibles on using cloth to make buttons.
This one shows how to make a TV remote out of it, but it should be easy to adjust for your application.

Hey! I found a Pillow just like that a few years ago and I bought it for my sister as a birthday present. pretty cool though!
