Viking Triangle Hat

Intro: Viking Triangle Hat

Hi!

Today I'll show you how to make a viking triangle hat.

I guess not so many people would wear it, but it looks cool and it's soooo comfortable and will keep you warm. I made it for my costume.

STEP 1: Things You Will Need

- Some fabrics. The best is to use woolen cloth on the outside part and the linen cloth on the inside,

- some fur,

- thread and needle, pins,

- scissors.

If you want to make some embroidery you will need some colorful cotton thread too...

STEP 2: Measuring and Sketching and Cutting

Now it's time to make some measurement.

This hat is practically made of two triangles sewed together. So you need to measure the circumference of your head. Now take this number and divide it by two. You' ll get the size of a base of each triangle. But you should add some space for stitching.
The height of the triangle is left on your consideration.

If you want a slightly better shape, cut a circular sector instead of triangle. But triangle is easier to sketch ;)

So go get some measuring tape or a string and after that do some sketching.
After that cut two triangles from wool and a lining from linen.

I also cut one smaller triangle out of wool that I used for ornamentation.

STEP 3: Some Needlework Now..

Aaand it's time to sew everything together.

So now place the triangles and linings on themselves and secure them with pins. Layers  go: inside, outside, outside, inside, because after stitching we will turn it inside out.

If you chose to have some embroidery you should make it before sewing the hat together, because it would be hardly done later. So before I started to sew everything together, I sewed a piece with embroidery to one of the triangles.

After that make some lining on the edges of the hat, so it will be more "flat".

When you're finished with the triangle part take a stripe of fur and sew it on the edge of the cap.

You can also add some jingle bell at the top of the hat :D

You should also try, if the hat fits your head before sewing ;)

STEP 4: Finish!

So you're done! Now you won't be cold during raids (or your travels to school or work).

These hats were worn in way, that the top of the hat was pending on the one side.

I don't like the fur I used. :(
it looks like Santa's hat.
some darker one would be great.

aand we've just discovered where Santa got his hat. He nicked it from a passing viking! (before coca-cola gave him new colours, santa was green) I love this hat, it looks very nice and warm!

Well I think it looks great! :) Maybe some hairier fur would be better, but it's still good ;) You could also make your own embroidery design :D

But I still think it's a great result ;) !

This looks awesome. Really piques the imagination!

Very cool hat. I would love to see a pic of your entire costume.

Thanks :) Well.. I could post a photo, but I'm still finishing some details.

here's my 3year old costume I used for a norse warrior character, but it wasn't good, so I'm making new one right now :) (I'm the guy at the left)

Did you really kill the cats also on your last raid?! Great project, whuha!!!

Thank you :) In fact I'm really thinking about wearing it, because it started to snow yesterday in my town :D

Thanks a lot! It took about half of time of the whole making :D
