Wall Bed

Intro: Wall Bed

Since I'm living in a tiny flat in HK, I wanna setup myself a Murphy bed for a long time.

Until I saw the "Ikea Hack - Murphy Bed with Sliding Doors" by newfangled
Ikea-Hack-Murphy-Bed-with-Sliding-Doors

I believe I can do it too! I just bought a next bed and a second hand ikea pax wardrobe with 2 sliding door.

Need another 2 doors to make a similar cabinet. I hope I can finish it within 2 weeks.

STEP 1: Next Bed

Bought a next bed through Internet from UK. Luckily their factory is in China, so the delivery fee is quite low. (HKD$ 5,117~ USD$ 658)

STEP 2: 2nd Hand Ikea Pax Wardrobe (200x66x236cm)

Can't wait ikea sale, bought this 2nd hand closet through Internet (HKD$ 2,500 ~ USD$ 320)

STEP 3: Other Parts From Ikea

Ordered 2 Sliding Door (200X236cm) - HKD$ 3,290 ~ USD$ 423

newfangled's Instructables used the third cabinet as parts, it would be really expensive if I do it in a same way.

So I choose BESTÅ VARA Door(60 x 192cm) as the upper track of the top section. - HKD$ 350 ~ USD$ 45

Then Use ikea Ribba ledge(115cm x 2) as the lower track of the bottom section - HKD$ 180~ USD$ 23

STEP 4: Track Work

Join two ledges by old parts and to strengthen By adding frame.

VARA Door(the upper track of the top section) arrived finally.

Drilling holes for the track. Wrap the stick(192x2.5x5cm x 3 - $HKD66 ~$US8.5)

with white wall paper then nail it to the top part

STEP 5: Doors

Combines all cabinet stuff together today!

Discovered that spacing 192cm is too aggressive, the top track is bent when the door is closed....Some stablize work need to do next week.

Hope the bed will be ready next week too, my backbone started complaining the cold, hard ground...

STEP 6: Bed Day

Setting up the bed is easy but the drilling work. I chose the very good quality tile of the house XD.

Because of the time consuming drilling work, I need to fix the bending track next week.

I saw a pic from Internet that next bed have support leg. I don't know if my bed is new or old version, it hasn't. Anyway, I make it myself with the old parts from my last last bed~

STEP 7: Stabilization

Planed to drill 3 holes to the ceiling to fix the bending track, end up 1 is enough~

1 is not enough finally, the track bent again after a week. Make it 3 this weekend~

STEP 8: Use of Space

Setting up the bed is easy... keeping the cats off your new project isn't. ;)

Thanks for sharing, looks like a great project :)

It's Looks wonderful. Thank youfor sharing.
Nice - looking forward to hear (see) how it goes :)
I build that bed for the cats actually 'cause one of them keeps p on my bed when I'm not home...he really miss me a lot... XD
One of our kitty-boys "thinks outside the box" too. Good luck with that. NO fun coming home tired and having to do laundry before you can sleep.
Since the wall bed is done, no cat pee on the bed anymore...but poo...
Luckily, once only by now...XD
Totally off-topic, but... your cats are adorable!
Yes they are! After my hard day's work, cats will welcome me home~
Glad it worked out for you!
Great stuff!

I've added various stabilizations to mine, but I've never been able to completely get rid of the bending at the middle - it's amazing what a mm or two will do.

What I did do was use the adjustments to rotate the tops of the doors as "outward" as possible. That way when the doors are in the center the bottoms are almost touch. I also usually stagger the doors, so that in the center you have one door that's on the front track and one door on the back.

It's not perfect, but it's close enough that no one but me would notice.
Glad to see you, original author~

Thanks to your magnificent design, I could have a decent and affordable wall bed. Although my work is a little bit rough (comparing to yours…), I’m happy with that cheaper version.

I plan to fix the bending tracking by screwing the top board to the ceiling. I should have done that yesterday but I can’t drill in Sunday, so…leave it next week.
That's a really good idea. I just bought a hammer drill for a different project, so now that I can actually drill into my ceiling I might have to give that a shot.

It's really too bad that ikea doesn't sell a wallbed. I'm sure that there's a market for one that's affordable, modern, and simple. And they'd probably sell a few extra mattresses too.
