Banana Hammock

Intro: Banana Hammock

If I can't get to my bananas in time they go soft on the part that's been resting on the counter. I've seen banana trees that hang you banana by the stems, but I wanted something that offered more support. Enter the banana hammock, a sling that holds your precious fruit and displays it for all to see.

Here's what you need to make your own:

  • 1 sq. yard of fabric (I used muslin)
  • needle + thread / sewing machine
  • carabiners
  • key rings
  • paracord

Ready to let your curved yellow fruit hang?

STEP 1: Trace + Cut

Since the muslin I was using was thin, and I have hefty bananas, I decided to double up the fabric to have additional support. Using a fabric marker I traced an elongated oval shape onto the muslin, then cut out the shape.

Knowing the ends of the oval were going to be cinched (bunched) to be the attachment points, the ends were truncated. Slits will be cut into the ends to form a connection point for the hammock line later.

STEP 2: Sew

The edges were folded over to give a clean edge and then sewn, this attaches the two muslin sheets into one.

The truncated oval ends were bifurcated and the edges folded over and sewn again. The flaps of the bifurcation were folded into the centre of the hammock shape, forming a tunnel which the key ring will slide into - making an attachment point for the carabiners. The flaps were then sewn in place.

STEP 3: Feed Keyring Through + Attach Carabiners

I always have a tough time opening keyrings so I used a tool to pry open the ring, the ring was then fed through the tunnel openings on each end of the hammock.

The carabiners were clipped to the keyrings to allow for quick release. Then, a loop was made with a length of paracord and attached to the carabiners.

STEP 4: Hang Bananas

All that's left is to do is find a suitable play to display your banana hammock.

Your bananas will be secure in their comfy and supportive hammock, but still on display so that everyone can admire your fruit.

LoL. I had a great time, and my boyfriend wants a hammock too. Thanks for the good time
Ahahaha I love this, thank you!
At first I was scared (due to the colloquial definition of banana hammock), but then I was pleasantly surprised.

Nicely done.

I have a budgerigar that I need to sneak through customs. Would your Instructable also be suitable for this?

...this made me GOL (giggle out loud) when I stumbled across it on the featured page. Congrats by the way (for getting featured, not making me giggle, albeit that in it self is a feat!)

Lovely work, but I suspect your hammock is a tiny bit too small for your bananas. I don't think they like to have their tips peeking out over the edge like that.

My first impression was: awesome, a banana slingshot! ;)

Manly it is! But what did you do with your underwear to have it that way?! Close encounters with 10.000 angry birds?

1. Cancel my instructables newletter subscription immediately.

2. Good call on the 100% natural fabric for the sling. Definitely don't want chafing or something rubbing the wrong way when used.

made me think of the friends episode, "princess consuella bananahammock"
