About: Michael's Test Kitchen - FOOD - SUGAR - RECIPES

There's nothing much easier to cook up as a side dish than these scalloped potatoes. Perfect for any special occasion, or just to compliment an ordinary dinner, scalloped potatoes is a dish you can make with staple items found in your kitchen. Make sure you have potatoes, cheddar cheese, flour, and half-and-half, and you're good to go.

If you don't have half and half, milk works well.

Supplies

5 cups potatoes, thinly sliced

4 teaspoons butter

3 tablespoons flour

1 ¼ cups half and half

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon marjoram

1 cup grated cheddar cheese

Step 1: Cut the Potatoes

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Be sure to cut your potatoes thinly and uniformly, as shown.

Step 2: Make the Roux

Melt the butter in a pan. Add flour, and stir until the mixture becomes a paste.

Step 3: Half and Half

Add half and half, and turn to medium heat, stirring, until mixture is simmering. Add salt and marjoram.

Step 4: Cheese

Remove from heat and add the shredded cheese, stirring until combined.

Step 5: In the Dish

In a 9-inch pie pan, build the layers; place the first layer of potatoes on the bottom, and coat with half the cheese sauce.

Repeat, layering the second and final layer of potatoes over the layer of cheese sauce, and pour the remaining amount of cheese sauce over the second layer of potatoes.

Bake in preheated oven for 50 minutes, or until mixture is boiling and golden brown on the top.

Step 6: Enjoy!
