Introduction: How to Make an LED Sign Box That Changes Colors

Waaay cheaper than paying someone to do it. Make any sign, whether its for business or just for fun, stand out. This project is specifically for a sign box but there are a ton of awesome uses for RGB LED light strips. Hopefully this will inspire you to be creative and start a project of your own! I think you'll be pleased with the results

Step 1: Measure Your Sign Box and Get Supplies

Measure your box and order supplies.

What you need:

1.) RGB (red green blue) LED light strips with adhesive backing

2.) Controller to turn lights off and on and control the speed at which the lights cycle through colors (Adapters for controller box should be included)

3.) Power supply

!!!!!Once you get everything you need, make sure everything works BEFORE you start sticking, screwing and mounting!!!!

We got all of the supplies at superbrightleds.com for a pretty good price and everything worked like it was supposed to but feel free to look around.

Also, make sure everything will fit in your sign box and make sure the controller will be accessible from where you plan to put the sign.

Step 2: Start Installing the LED Light Strip

Now that you tested everything out you can lay everything out in your box and begin installing the lights.

Be sure to press firmly as you install the strip to make sure it stays stuck.

The connecting wires are easy to figure out and there is no soldering required at least with the strip we used.

Step 3: Screw or Mount the Power Supply (in Box) and Controller (out of Box)

Most power supplies will have slots so you can screw it right on to the frame of the box.

superbrightleds.com even has a power supply calculator so you know exactly which one to get.

We used 48 feet of light strip for this sign box and 122 lumens per foot. We were right at 5856 lumens and using the power supply calculator we determined that we needed a 150 watt power supply.

Step 4: Test It Out!

Light it up then finish your sign!

Step 5: Put the Sign Where You Want It at Watch People See You!
