Introduction: Re-store Classic Car Sun Visors - Updated! - Volkswagen Bus

About: Recent life remod... into the 3 C's... Computers, Camping, Cars, and too many others to list. I had a VW bus, a westfalia, if you don't have one ... you need one. I do.

Classic Sun Visor restore for a VW Bus. Will work on most sun visors with inner frame.

Step 1: Remove Visors From Auto

Remove assembly from auto, being careful to keep all pieces separate from the other sides peices (our driver side visor differs from the passengers side) Now is the time to replace any broken or missing pieces.

Step 2: Trace Visor

Trace your visor out actual size for reference before removing old cover and padding. I knew I didn't want to use the original covers, so I wasn't careful in removing them. You might want to re use yours, so a few of these steps won't be needed in your project.

Step 3: Second Visor

Since The visors on our '79 VW bus are different designs, I trace both and labeled each for their sides

Step 4: Cut 2 in Plastic Canvas

I traced out and cut 2 of each pattern in plastic canvas, actual size.

Step 5: Batting

Fold batting, and place top edge of pattern along fold, trace and cut 1 in each shape

Step 6: Add an Inch

unlike the batting, place pattern bottom along fold and cut out 1 in each shape,But add 1 inch along all edges. With the cover stll inside out, stitch along both ends of the pattern with your sewing machine, leaving the top edge open all the way.

Step 7: These Are the Peices Ready for Assembly

This is what you should have ready to put together.

Step 8: Assembly

layer your pieces like a sandwich, batting, plastic canvas, frame, plastic canvas, batting. I used a needle and thread to sew through everything and the frame in one or two spots to keep it all from shifting during daily use. Then slide the whole unit into the cover from the top. Fold over the top of the cover inward and pin. The sew along the top of the visor to close.

Step 9: Finished Visors

Repeat all steps for the second visor, and you should have a nice set of visors for under 20 bucks. This project took me about half a day start to finish.

Step 10: Visors Installed!

Visors installed, Cieling covered. And a hint of my next project... Curtains!

Step 11: Visors Installed, Cieling Covered

Visors installed! Sweet!
