The Electric Lily or the Safety Pin: How to Be Safe and Look Good Doing It

This instructable is for walkers and bikers alike. Whoever wants to be seen at night and still look good. Give it to your girlfriend, your sis, your bro, homeboy or even your mom. Any one who is stylish and walks, runs, or bikes  at night!!!


I will demonstrate folding this using opaque paper not the transparent plastic because the plastic is imposable to see in the pictures. I will include some pictures anyway. cool beans.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Materials
you will need

1. sheet protector; any sort of plastic should do, I'm getting some colored cellophane to try this with next.

2. L.E.D.s; I got mine from Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories shop.

3. Batteries;  I used CR2032 3V Lithium Batteries so there was no need for a resistor.

4. Origami paper for practice.

5. Thread; color doesn't matter here I just used green so it would blend in.

Tools
there aren't many tools you'll need for this project.

1. Scissors or any cutting blade should do at that, exacto, pocket knife, katana, T-rex teeth

2. Binder clip or any clamping tool   

Step 2: Making Squares

Take your sheet protector (or if you are practicing printer paper) and cut the bottom and side bits off (only for sheet protector). Unfold and cut in half. Fold that in half lengthwise and fold down one corner to the edge making a triangle. Cut or tear down the lengthwise fold until you reach the bottom. Fold down the bottom of the triangle and cut or tear along that new fold.

a square!

This is because when you fold down one corner to the edge your making a right triangle and unfold that. You have two right triangles sharing a hypotenuse or a square bisected by a diagonal line. 

Step 3: Making Rectangles

 This is a pretty easy step. Just fold the square in half and cut along that fold.

bam! a rectangle 

and the cool  thing is if you take a square potion out of this rectangle you'll be left with another square!

Make 12 rectangles; 4 of these will be called the "leaves" and 8 the "petals".

Step 4: The Petals

Lets take this in steps.
1. fold a mountain fold lengthwise 
2. fold one corner up to the edge.
3. repeat on the four corners
4. fold open edge to the mountain fold
5. repeat on other edge
6. now for the buzz kill.... make 7 more

but don't worry it won't take long

by the way a flat bit of metal or bone folder makes for easier folding

Step 5: The Leaves

The leaves are much like the petals

1. fold a mountain fold lengthwise 
2. fold one corner up to the edge.
3. repeat on the four corners
4. fold open edge to the mountain fold
5. repeat on other edge
6. double back on the mountain fold  
7. make 3 more

Step 6: Assembly: Part 1

 Stack the units like so:
                                            petal   petal   petal   petal > fold this one in half and unfold   
                                            petal   petal   petal   petal  
                                            leaf     leaf      leaf     leaf

So in the end you'll have 4 stacks with two petals and one leaf. 

Step 7: Assembly: Part 2

Grasp all stacked units like shown and begin winding thread along the half fold previously make. Once all unit are well bound tie a double knot  sealing the deal. Separate the units. For plastic you may need to binder clip this for twenty minuets. Slide in led now.

Step 8: Assembly: Part 3

Fold up every other petal till there are none left. Sounds easy? you try it. Warning can be really hard with plastic

Step 9: Battery and Customization

Bend the cathode and anode to form a sort of clip to put the battery in. Slide in battery and place a bit of paper in between one of the leads. Wrap with tape. Pull out and slide in the paper to turn it off and on. (or skip this and buy a battery clip). Hot glue a safety pin for a brooch or attach a magnet and affix to your bike!
