Water damage?

Does water damage wood where holes have been made, for example, for screws?

Wood is porous and absorbs water, like a sponge, and is especially absorbent on the end grain.

Screws penetrate the wood and exposes more end grain around the opening. Though water can damage wood at any point of contact, openings (like from screws) introduce a very absorbent route for water to penetrate.
