What is the best gear ratio for my Go-Kart? Details below

I have a Go-kart I am building and was wondering what gear I should get that connects to the axle from my motor. It will be Direct Drive and the motor has a 11 tooth sprocket. The motor is 48 v, 1000 watts and 3000 rpm. The wheels are 9.5 in diameter. I will be driving on mostly to totally flat areas.

Had a motor speed of 2000 RPM (run at 500 watts) and a final drive ratio of 14:1

I used quite small 10 inch wheels (go kart sized). This was aimed at getting the highest mileage from the batteries over a 4 hours race. Top speed vs acceleration wasn't too important.

So to get 14:1 your wheel gear needs to have 154 teeth. You also need a substantial chain either a motor bike chain or a go kart chain - a bike chain isn't strong enough.

You have to make a trade off of top speed against acceleration, depending on where your going to ride it - flat ground or hilly ground you may need to adjust the gearing.

Your motor is unlikely to actually be 1000watts. Manufacturers tend to quote optimistic figures unless they state continuous performance. Our motor was rated at 250 watts cont. BUT we ran it at 20 amps at 24 volts so 480 watts and on occasion drew over 70 amps. This gave us about 26 MPH with a peak of 32Mph at this rate we could run for 2 hourse on 2 car batteries.
