Noose

So, I've heard from a few people that it's illegal to tie a hangman's noose...and that having 13 loops is illegal from others...what is it really? (I live in FL, if it's state specific) Also, why am I not emailed about a new replies to my topics any more?

If I might add to nachomahma, kiteman, cameronss comments. The negative sentiment is also dependant on the observer's cultural background as well. In the case of the Swastika for example, it is the ancient Sanskrit symbol for wellness and prosperity (then adopted by the Nazis). Therefore it is not uncommon to see large Swastikas on todays hospitals, spiritual centers and even spas in certain part of the world.

But didn't he Nazis flip it? ...Clock wise instead of counter clock wise?
. IIRC, the main thing that distinguishes the Nazi swastika from "religious" swastikas is the Nazi version is "tilted."
.
. See also the Wikipedia entry on swastikas.

There is nothing illegal about a noose, just superstitiousness (13 turns for the 13 people at the last supper), although I guess there are problems if you actually use it...

However

I picked up from an item on the BBC about Barack Obama that the hangman's noose has become an extremely potent racist symbol in some Southern states, thanks to it's use by lynch-mobs, so maybe it's a problem if you make one and wave it around provocatively?
yeah, there was a big think in Louisiana a month or so ago with discrimination that originated from some nooses in a tree.

it was not illegal to display the nooses in louisiana.
That's the very story they mentioned (and about how Obama was careful not to join the protest to free the "Jena 6").

Actually I'd heard very little about Obama until recently (most UK pundits reckon Hillary Clinton will win). I can't make up my mind about him. He certainly seems to be avoiding any issue about the colour of his skin (Rev Jesse Jackson called him "too white", I believe), but I can't decide if he'd be good for the US - will he be able to fight poverty without dealing with race issues, or will he spend his time in office trying to deal with the angry mobs trying to burn the White House down?
well Cheney's wife figured out that he is a distant cousin of Cheney, so i do wonder if people will take that and run with it as well.

I do know that my cousin is against Obama because his middle name is Hussein.

I have not really looked much into any of the candidates yet as there are still way too many. Im waiting for next year. And now that Colbert has said he is running...

The issue is not the noose itself, like NachoMahma said. The issue is that it has become a symbol of lynching, rather like the swastika now relates to the Holocaust and burning crosses relates to the Ku Klux Klan. If you hang it out for Halloween, as long as it obviously not a racist threat, you would probably be okay. A recent story on CNN (you and your BBC Kiteman...Darned Europeans) discussed a Halloween supply store/haunted house that had a realistic mannequin hanging from a noose on their billboard, and had come under fire by locals for being distasteful. They said that the only thing that might be illegal about it was that it might exceed the maximum display area for the billboard. Emails: go to your settings. Did you deselect the email box? I'm still getting messages.
