R/C Car Robot

I have an old rc car that i wanted to make into a robot for my graduation project. I want it to be able to sense a possible threat (wall, tree, person, other car) and be able to drive without help of a remote control. I have a NXT Intelligent Brick (meant for Legos) it has a 32-bit ARM7 microprocessor. Support for Bluetooth wireless communication. 1 USB 2.0 port. 4 input ports. 3 output ports. Powered by 6 AA (1.5v) Batteries, not included, or lithium Rechargeable Battery (#9798), sold separately. Up to three NXT Bricks can be connected at the same time; however, you can only communicate with one NXT Brick at a time. This is the individual component, and does not include any sensors, motors, cords, software or other accessories; for the complete LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT set, please see item #8527. Do you think it is possible to get it to work? Also if you have ideas please tell me.

THREe YEARS???!!! You Could easily do it in three MONTHS!!!! FIrst off, do u wnat to maintain remote control or have it be fully automatic? ANyway,the RCX is useful, and if you programme it to work and hook it up to the motors and wire it dpending on you're purpose. It is possile with some lego hardware mods.

Just connect 2 UV LEDs to an output port with one tied to +5 and the other to ground, and a UV receiver to an input port. This would leave two line to turn the robot left and right. Make sure that they're optically shielded from each other (receiver in the middle). Write a program to flash each LED back and forth (Turn the port high for one and low for the other). Watch the receiver for input. If data is received, turn the opposite direction of the last LED flashed. This would normally avoid any obstacle it's approaching. You would then play with the program to make it more accurate.

i have three years to make this so i have plenty of time to make it as accurate as posible.
