To be honest, I don't think that if you don't know what you're doing now, you probably won't be able to. If you feel like taking the plunge, you might want to look at the daisy that ledzeppie posted.
Agree. This is one of the times where the saying "If you have to ask, then it's not for you." is really relevant.

"Agree. This is one of the times where the saying "If you have to ask, then it's not for you." is really relevant." <---- nonsense ... if i never ask then ill never learn
I disagree. It's a matter of complexity and taking too large steps in your learning. You can't go from a building a soapbox car/cart to building a a real racing car. That is a too huge jump between the complexities. By going a small step up in complexity (soapbox car, bicycle, motorbike, car, performance car, racing car) you can usually figure out most of the basics yourself due to your gained experience and you only have to ask about the absolute specifics. In this case you asked to be taught/referred to about the general basic procedures of doing this. If you had enough experience to pull a thing like this off you would have known more about it and been able to ask for the specifics. like "can you recommend a MP3 hardware decoder preferably in a soic case and a controller for my display that seems to be blahh blahh blahh.." Asking is never wrong, but you have top accept that some things are not reasonable to to at a certain experience level regardless how many follow up questions you ask.

Yes, you should definitely try. And when you succeed I will be the first to admit that I was wrong.

I'll be second. And matseng, your previous comment has proved true to me, many times. :-P
Matseng doesn't mean that for everything, just this project - the Daisy would be the way to go. At least, unless zachninme will sell one of his upcoming mp3 players.
Ogg Vorbis players, none of this mp3 nonsense!
