This week I made a Film Strip Picture sign, to go with my Movie Ticket sign. This would look great in any room.

What you will need:

Cad/Cam program ( I used Vectric Aspire )

CNC Router ( I used the X-Carve CNC )

Wood ( I used White Pine 29" x 8 1/2" x 3/4" ) but you could use Poplar

90* V-Bit and 1/4" Endmill Bit

Orbital Sander with 120 and 220 grit sandpaper

Rust-oluem Matte Clear and Gloss

Rust-oluem Black Spray Paint

Picture hangers and nails

Hammer

Step 1: Design and Add Toolpaths

I designed the sign in Vectric Aspire, first making a border and adding some square boxes. Then I added some Toolpaths, first the V-Carve toolpath using a 90* V-Bit and 1/4" Endmill for clearance bit. Then I added a Profile toolpath, using the 1/4" Endmill, added tabs to hold the stock in place. After adding toolpaths, I preview all Toolpaths to see if it was going to come out right.

Step 2: Carve

Now I fasten my piece of stock in the CNC and carved first using the 90* V-Bit, then inserted the 1/4" endmill and finish up the sign.

Step 3: Clear Coat

After hand sanding all the little bevels, I sprayed a coat of clear Matte finish. Note if you don't seal the wood before painting, the pine wood will need more coats of paint.

Note let this dry overnight before continuing

Step 4: Paint

Now spray the sign with Black spray paint and let dry.

I would let the paint dry a couple of days before going to next step

Step 5: Sand

Then you can sand the Top coat of paint off, I started using 120 grit sandpaper and then used 220 grit.

Be sure and blow off and wiped down real good before next step.

Step 6: Mod Podge Pictures

Print some pictures that you would like on your sign, I found some old pictures on the Internet of the Town that I live in. Cut them down to the size of my big squares. Then I brush some Mod Podge onto the square and place the picture face up as shown in the pictures. Then brush some more Mod Podge over them.

Note let the Mod Podge dry overnight before next step.

Step 7: Finish

Attached Sawtooth hangers to the back side, then I sprayed a couple coats of Rust-oluem Clear Gloss finish. Then let this dry a day or two.

Note I sprayed a coat of Matte finish over the piece before paint and sprayed Gloss over the Finish. Maybe next time I should use the same for both.
