Update: Prizes have been changed. Ratings, Pageviews, and Random winners to receive an additional $75 in LEDs.

LED Throwies were published here on on Feb. 14, 2006 by Q-Branch of the GRL.

This simple, elegant project spawned a minor LED revolution: from Instructables like the LED Throwie Floatie, Talkie, Rat, and motion-sensor to the weird mash-up of art and advertising in the Boston Mooninite scare, it's clear that anyone can make something fun with LEDs -- including you.

So, in honor of the upcoming two-year anniversary of the throwie, we're holding an LED-based speed contest we're calling Get the LED Out!

You have three weeks to publish the coolest Instructable featuring LEDs of any kind. That's right -- any project using LEDs will be eligible, so be creative! We've got lots of LED Instructables to get you inspired, and even some help for beginners.

Need more incentive?
The fantastic ladyada of Adafruit Industries has donated some of her great TV-B-Gone kits for the winners! Check out her store for more kits and inspiration.

Since this is a short contest we're letting the audience judge!
Find the entries here and rate your favorite projects so we know what you like. Vote for as few or as many as you like - it's up to you. Only positive votes will count in this contest! We're not including ballot stuffing or negative votes, so please exercise good sportsmanship.

We'll judge based on the standings at noon PST on Thursday, February 14, 2008 so everyone will have time to check out and vote on even the latest entries. Results will be posted shortly thereafter.

How to Enter

- Make an amazing project with LEDs and post it on Instructables.
- Add it to the Get the LED Out group by 11:59pm PST, Sunday February 10, 2008.

Rating Prizes:
The five Instructables with the highest rating will win anInstructables Robot t-shirt.
The Instructable with the highest rating will also receive an Adafruit IndustriesTV-B-Gone kit and $75 worth of LEDs from Phenoptix.

Page Views Prize:
The Instructable with the greatest number of pageviews will receive anInstructables Robot t-shirt, an Adafruit Industries TV-B-Gone kit and $75 worth of LEDs from Phenoptix.

We'll conduct a random drawing from the remaining pool of entries, and one lucky winner will receive anInstructables Robot t-shirt, an Adafruit Industries TV-B-Gone kit and $75 worth of LEDs from Phenoptix.

Only projects posted during the contest period are eligible. If you've already submitted a suitable Instructable, make another iteration with improvements and submit it to the contest! Post an improved version of someone else's Instructable with a link back to your source of inspiration!

We're looking for neat and creative projects, so let your imagination run wild.

Project Submission Start Date: January 21, 2008.
Project Submission Deadline: 11:59pm PST, Sunday February 10, 2008.

If you need LED's, now is the time of the year. Go to a store and pick up some christmas lights(often with quite nice discounts after the holidays). You can cut or pull them out quite fast and you have your extremely cheap LED's. And before somebody makes a stupid remark about how not all christmas lights are LEDs; If you buy the wrong ones you have new christmas lights for next year...

bart416 (author)Trace II2008-03-04

You'd be amazed what certain people would qualify as LEDs...

1up (author)2008-02-23

The Instructable we want to enter... Does it have to be make between the time the contest starts and ends in order for it to be eligible?

fungus amungus (author)1up2008-02-23

This contest ended and the winners have already been announced. For contests, there is a time frame that the Instructables need to be entered. The calendar image shows the range.

1up (author)fungus amungus2008-02-23

Yeah, I know, I entered the last one. I meant for future contests. Does the Instructable you want to enter have to be made within the running period of the contest?

fungus amungus (author)1up2008-02-23

Yes, it does. We're looking into letting people know about contests ahead of time so they don't feel cheated, but at the same time we need to have a range of dates so that there's a level playing field.

1up (author)fungus amungus2008-02-24

Hmmph. So I have a good Instructable idea, but if I want to enter it in a future LED contest, I better not post it now?

FreshPineSent (author)2008-02-15

Can we do this again? I have an incredible idea, I think it might have won the challenge.

Due to the great amount of great entries we'll consider doing this one again. If so, it will not be happening soon as we want to go through a variety of contests. Next time we might give a heads up before it starts.

The_pyrogeek (author)2008-02-23

PLEASE do this again!! I had a great idea, but this ended to early....

joejoerowley (author)2008-02-14

I have a question. My instructable has a bunch of page views but not the most. The ones above it have a lot/ highest ratings, so since you can only win one prize per contest I think I am going to win, page views? is that right? Thanks Joe

We're still crunching the numbers, but when there is one Instructable that is tops on both list, it is selected as the winner in the category where it is most clearly the winner. For example, if the winner has 10,000 page views and a rating of 100 and the next highest ones have 9,000 page views and a rating of 50, then it will be chosen as the winner in the ratings category. Hope that helps clear things up.

Yeah, that does more or less. I won't bother you anymore. I am looking forward to winning the random prize because I don't think I have a chance for page views. Thats ok I guess. Thanks You guys rock!

lordofthedonuts (author)2008-02-09

I need help, fast! I've done my LED Instructable, but I don't know how to join the Get The LED Out group, i've selected the option when I published my instructable to add it to the contest but I don't see it! If anyone can help me, please!

that happened to me too, but i just waited like a day and it showed up eventually :-) don't worry i'm almost positive that it's added to the group and that they'll know. ahha

Ahh, thanks.

I see what happened. You submitted it with only one step so it got held up. Since it's a video instructable, resubmit it as such. Go to Submit>New Video and follow the instructions from there.

I remade the Instructable as a video instructable, added it to the LED contest, I don't see it in the current entries but I don't worry as Alvincredible said, I think it will be there. Thanks

Yup, you're in.

phenoptix (author)zaketus2008-02-06

The LEDs will be shipped anywhere in the world for free!

technodude92 (author)2008-02-05

Damn! i have the perfect project too. but i'm not going to get it in by then

Yerboogieman (author)2008-02-04

zachninme (author)marc922008-01-24

me too. I am going to ace them. :) Best of luck w/ your instructables I mean finals.

ledzep567 (author)joejoerowley2008-01-21
