Any scale- model makers?

Hi, I am the art director on a very low-budget but so-far amazing movie. I want to make an inexpensive but professional looking model of an observatory. So far, I am thinking of using sculpey. Can anyone please help with some leads? I know I could put this together, but instructables, websites, or comments about materials or construction would help immensely. This website is full of resourceful people. Thanks!

Cool airplane model made from scratch

Another interesting story from Africa about handmade goods. I'd love to get one of these.Phillip Isohe is a metal fabricator in the jua kali, non-traditional industrial sector, in Kenya. In his spare time he builds models of airplanes and buses. This seems to be an extension of what many of us did while growing up in Africa - building wire, or tin can, cars. What's most interesting is the excruciating attention to detail that he puts into each one. In fact, they each have motors with working lights, steering, engine and interiors. full story

Metal Work

Does anyone out there have any knowledge on Cadam programming? I have a mini lathe and milling head and thinking about putting a Cad system on them. Would it be cheaper to just buy one already set up? Also looking for model plans to build and construct.

IBM model M has 5 keys that do not work. How can I clean those contacts in the membranes?

The keyboard is in excellent shape otherwise.  Can I puncture the bottom metal shell in the locations in trouble and then inject contact cleaner?  Are there some other vent holes that might be used?  Could it be an electonic problem or circuit board plating in those areas?  The five keys affected are : g,  h,    apostophe ,   up arow,  and the number pad zero. Thanks

I want to make a life-sized model of Sputnik. Answered

The original Sputnik looked really slick and threatening! I want one! Unfortunately, the original is unavailable, so I'll have to settle for something more modest. The original Sputnik looked like the one in the picture. My goal is to make a model that is life-sized and pretty good looking. Coolness is paramount; precision and accuracy are not. Does anyone have ideas about how to make the sphere part easily? The criteria for my model sphere is that it needs to be:     Roughly 60cm in diameter (I believe the original was ~58cm)     Strong and rigid enough that I can attach the four antennas     Light enough that I can hang it from my ceiling     It is okay to be a little rough (i.e. it doesn't need to be polished steel or whatever) Right now I'm thinking I should get a bunch of pieces of hard-cell foam, stack and glue them, and carve a sphere. Then I'll sand it smooth and spray paint it silver. Is this a good approach? Any other ideas for the project?

I bought some contour putty not long ago to use on my pistol model (an homage to gmjhowe that I hope to have up sometime soon, thought it may have to wait till after finals) but so far it seems too soft when dry to use, am I doing it wrong, or is it just like that?

3D Modeling Program?

I have some ideas for a project I want to build, but I'd let to sketch it out in 3D form and create a model. Are there programs that can do this? I'd prefer free ones, but I guess I can shell out a few bucks if needed. I basically just need somewhere to put my thoughts into a 3D design so I can view what I'm actually building.

Making a 3D DNA model

Hi, I was thinking about trying to make one of those 3D DNA models you see in schools, showing all the atoms in the molecules joined together and climbing up in that beautiful double helix shape.Trouble is, I don't have the money to spend on one of those several-hundred-dollar kits, and I can't figure out exactly how a single nucleotide should look, let alone how to make several dozen nucleotides and joining them all together.I've searched google without much success, so any pointers/helpful guide images would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Does anyone know how treads affect torque? Answered

I am referring to treads like those found on tanks etc.  If the torque on each wheel in a three wheel set is x ft/lbf how would the addition of a tread affect that torque?  Would it increase/decrease it significantly?  Or at all?  Would the thickness of the tread have a noticeable effect?

Halo Replica Question

Alright, I'm trying to make a replica of the Halo 3 Magnum (Yes, I know that technically it's not a Magnum but I don't feel like trying to remember the real name) and I already have the base cardboard cutout for it, but I realized that what I was going to do is a little more complicated than I thought. Originally I had seen someone who built an Assault rifle and Splazer out of just cardboard by having the basic shape in the middle and then layering it on both sides in certain areas in order to make it 3D. I was wondering though what other ways of making models are there that's fairly "easy" for a fanboy to do. "Easy" by means of accessibility; I know whatever I do is goin to take some amount of work to do, but I don't want someone telling me to use a vacuform machine. I just need to know if there's any ways of making replicas that doesn't require extravagant amounts of money or resources.

very similar to 33cc Gas GS Moon Scooter.

Verified it has spark. Compression. It has no pull cord, so I used a high speed drill to turn it over, while spraying carb spray directly in to it. Also the on/off or kill switch is broken. I have taken apart and cleaned out the carb.  I've dried different variations of grounding the kill switch. At this point, I'm stumped. Also, I have a few scrap 33cc weed eaters laying around for parts. Need some help Very appreciated Brian
