What are some uses for Sodium Carbonate?

It's basic, less so than sodium hydroxide but can be used as"washing soda". Do you have a tub and wonder if there'ssomething cool to be had out of it?

We used to have an old washing machine. Picture a 55 gallon drum with a lid and a motor on the bottom.
