Introduction: How to Build a Storage Shelf for 2 Inch Hitches

After searching around for some ideas on how to store 2" Hitches, I came across a great Instructable by The QDog. Like him, this too is my 1st Instructable. As good as his is, unfortunately I could not repeat his version as it requires vertical space, and my garage did not have the space.

I did realize that I could leverage some of his design concepts into a horizontal or shelf unit instead, so here it is!

Step 1: Cut Common Boards Prior to the Build

  1. Cut 1" x 4" common board into twelve (12) pieces, 12" x 2-3/16"
  2. Cut 1" x 4" common board into six (6) pieces, 12" x 2-5/32"
  3. Cut 2" x 4" common board at an angle of ~16.3°, corner to corner. Repeat for a 2nd piece.

Step 2: Sandwich 12" Blocks

  1. Using wood glue, sandwich three (3) 12" x 3/4" x 2-5/32" boards together, by width, to create wood blocks for dividers
  2. Repeat for the remainder of the wider blocks
  3. Repeat for the four (4) sets of 2-3/16" blocks

Step 3: Build Shelf Assembly

  1. Insert the two (2) larger glued blocks (12" x 2-5/32" x 2-1/4"), flush at the narrow end, between the two (2) 12" x 24" plywood panels
  2. Attach using wood screws but do not tighten
  3. Insert the four (4) narrow glued blocks (12" x 2-3/16" x 2-1/4"), evenly space between the two (2) 12" x 24" plywood panels. You can use a 2" Hitch as a spacer
  4. Attach using wood screws then tighten all blocks to plywood

Step 4: Attach Angled Risers

  1. Evenly space the three (3) 2" x 4" angled pieces, cut side toward plywood. This should result in the 90° angle to be facing front
  2. Secure using wood screws

Step 5: Assembled Shelf Unit

Once built, I placed it between existing shelving, and that is what keeps it in place. The angled risers provide the necessary angle to ensure hitches do not easily fall out of the storage unit. It also provides a convenient shelf above for pins, locks, and other smaller related equipment. I hope this benefits someone!
