2 Person Camping Grill

Intro: 2 Person Camping Grill

I made this grill out of 2 stainless steel bowls and 2 cookie cooling racks. It's just big enough when cooking for two and the bowls still nest inside each other for storage. You can make one with just a few hand tools for about $10.00.

STEP 1: Cut the Inner Grill

Start by making the inner grill. I used a marker and a wire spool to trace a circle onto the cookie rack. I then used wire snips to cut the circle out. You just have to make sure the circle you cut is big enough to allow air circulation when you set it in the bowl.

STEP 2: Add the Mounting Holes

To keep the inner grill from moving around you have to drill a few holes in the bowl. These holes correspond with four points on the wire grill. Start by marking the holes with a center punch and follow it up with a drill. You could also do like I did and repeatedly hit the punch until it perforates the metal. Once done you simple slip the wire grill into place.

STEP 3: Add the Vents

Add vents in the bottom bowl with the help of a hand drill. Start with small drill bit, like 1/4", and move your way up. I went strait to 1/2" and some of the holes were rough. Nothing a little hammering can't fix.

STEP 4: Dress the Holes

To clean up the holes I used a dremel tool. Then I recessed any sharp edges with a ball peen hammer and ball punch. This recessed each hole making it more carry friendly.

STEP 5: Add the Handle and Upper Grill

I used a piece of drawer hardware as a handle. The screws I had were too long so I used wire strippers to cut them down. At this point I also cut out the upper grill. This time I used the top bowl as a template. The upper grill is held in place by the means of drilled holes. Just like the inner one. Don't forget to file off any sharp edges left behind by the wire snips.

STEP 6: Add the Pedestal

To make a stand I took the left over part from cutting the inner screen and bent four of the wires at 90 degrees. This make a nice little pedestal for the grill. Now it's time to fire it up.

STEP 7: Fire It Up.

Charcoal briquettes would work great but for today I'm using wood. Fill the bowl with wood and let it catch fire. Put lid on and let the fire go out. Now you have a bunch of wood coals. You can either put a pan right on top or grill your food with out one. Just make sure you use something to lift the lid as it is not insulated.

I'll have to watch for some bowls and racks at the second hand store and try this. I'll try fewer holes in the bottom, and put the handles on each side and try to keep them cooler.

insulating the handle is as easy as can be! Just cut some "washers" from thick wool felt scraps and place them between the lid top and handle connecting points. Voila!
