Introduction: 2011 17" Macbook Pro CPU Replacement Guide

This is a guide on how to get to and replace a CPU on the 2011 17" Macbook Pro.

Supplies

On order to makes this replacement you will need the following:

  • ESD strap/mat
  • 2.0mm phillips head screwdriver

  • 1.0mm phillips head screwdriver
  • 2.0mm triwing screwdriver

Step 1: Step 1: Unscrew and Take Off the Back Plate

Take a 2.0mm phillips head screw driver and unscrew the 10 screws on the back plate then lift the back plate.

Step 2: Step 2: Take Out the Battery

Use both a 2.0mm triwing and a 1.0mm phillips head screwdrivers to take out the 3 trywing screws holding in the battery and the 4 phillips head screws holding in the support brackets. Also unplug the motherboard power connector located on the left of the battery.

Step 3: Step 3: Remove the Fans

Using a 2.0mm phillips head screwdriver to take out the 6 phillips head screws out tat hold in the fans and unplug them. Then you can remove them from the chassis.

Step 4: Step 4: Remove the Motherboard

Use a 2.0mm phillips head screwdriver and remove the 8 screws holding in the motherboard.

Step 5: Step 5: Remove the Heat Sink

Take the motherboard out and flip it over. Then you can remove the 6 2.0mm phillips head screws holding on the heat sink.

Step 6: Step 6: Remove and Replace CPU

Look for the dye with an Intel label. Once found rove the the substance that holds the CPU in. Once you swap the CPU reapply the holding substance.

Step 7: Step 7: Reinstall the Heat Sink

Put the heatsink back on the 3 dyes and screw in the 3 2.0mm phillips head screws.

Step 8: Step 8: Reinstall the Motherboard to the Chassis

Once oriented correctly screw in the 8 2.0mm phillips head screws in their respective standoffs.

Step 9: Step 9: Reinstall the Fans

Place the 2 fans back in the system and screw in the 6 2.0mm phillips head screws in the screw holes given. Then plug the fans into the motherboard.

Step 10: Step 10: Reinstall the Battery

Place the battery back in and connect it back into the motherboard. Then install the 2 holding brackets with the 4 1.0mm phillips head screws and screw in the battery with the 3 2.0mm triwing screws.

Step 11: Step 11: Reinstall the Back Panel

Orient the back panel correct onto the chassis and then screw in the 10 2.0mm phillips head screws into their respective screw holes.
