Introduction: 3D Glass Painting Wall Art

About: I am a conceptual artist, and my DIY projects are mostly inspired by pop culture (movies, music, sports, TV). I mostly specialize in painting, graphic design, drawing, digital photography, performance art, and…

Glass painting came be fun and simple, however, these puffy paint pieces take 3-dimensional design / painting to a whole new level!

Step 1: Materials

To do this, you will need:

  • computer print-out of your favorite images
  • small picture frames (I'm using 5x7 inch frames
  • 3D puff paint or regular paint
  • engraving tool (I'm using the Engrave It Pro)

Step 2: Prep Image

To get started, google an image that you want to engrave on the glass, then print it out. In this example, I'm using the Union Jack flag.

Step 3: Lay Glass

Then, carefully take the glass out of the picture frame and place it on top of the image that you want to trace using your engraving tool.

Step 4: Trace Out Pattern

Now, grab your engraving tool, and trace the pattern of your image on the top of the glass. Make sure you wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes for this step!

Step 5: Outline and Fill In

Now, it's time to get creative! Using 3D puffy paint, outline the engravings, and let dry for a bit. Once it's dried a little, you can fill the entire image in. Then, let that dry completely before handling. You can also use regular paints and a small paint brush if you don't have much time.

Step 6: Display and Enjoy!

Finally, replace the painting in the frame, display, and enjoy! In this example, I did flags of the UK and Puerto Rico. However, you can use whatever images you would want! You can even try to challenge yourself and use photographs of your parents, kids, pets, or whoever else you want to make a painting out of!
