3D Printed Bookmark

This content module will guide you through designing a bookmark in Tinkercad and preparing it for 3D printing.

Tinkercad is a free web based CAD program: www.tinkercad.com

Step 1: Create Bookmark Base

1. Drag and drop a box onto workplane

2. Scale the box to bookmark size, which is about 25mm X 100mm

3. Adjust the height of box to 1mm

Step 2: Creating Bookmark Tongue (Optional)

1. Drag and drop a box onto workplane

2. Scale the box to 16mm x 2mm

3. With the box selected click hole in the upper right corner

4. Place the hole on the bottom of the bookmark

5. Drag and drop a box onto the workplane

6. Scale the box to 70mm x 2mm

7. With the box selected click hole in the upper right corner

8. Copy and paste the hole, by selecting the hole and clicking ctrl+c to copy and ctrl+v to paste.

9. Place both holes parallel to each other and tangent to smaller first hole as shown in the image

10. Left click and drag over all of the shapes on your plane, select group in the top right corner

Step 3: Personalizing Bookmark

1. Creating Design With Holes

a. Any shape can be turned into a hole by selecting the shape and clicking “Hole” in the upper right corner

b. Drag and drop desired shape onto workspace

c. Select the shape and turn it into a hole

d. Drag hole onto desired location on bookmark base

e. Left click and drag to select the bookmark base and hole(s)

f. While selected group hole(s) and bookmark base, by clicking “Group” in the upper right corner

g. Get creative and repeat the steps to create a fun custom design

2. Creating Design With Indents

a. Indentations can be created by raising the shape hold so it doesn’t go all the way through the bookmark base

b. To do so simply raise the shape hole 1 mm

c. Place in desired location on bookmark base

d. Group bookmark base and hole(s)

Step 4: 3D Print

1. Downloading File for 3D Printing

a. Once design is complete select “Design” from the upper left corner

b. Click on menu option “Download for 3D Printing”

c. Select “.STL” button

d. The file will now appear in the downloads folder and can be opened in a 3D printer software

2. Sending Model to Print

a. If you don’t have a 3D Printer, you can easily send a 3D model to print through Tinkercad

b. Once the design is complete select “Design” from the upper left-hand toolbar

c. Click on menu option “Order a 3D Print”
