Introduction: 3D Printed Joint

In this tutorial, I will show the entire development process that I have taken to make a 3d printed joint that connects three 10mm wood rods in a pyramidal shape.

Supplies

  • 3D Printer
  • PLA
  • Rhino 7
  • Cura LulzBot
  • Sanding paper
  • Pliers

Step 1: 3d Modelling

From the sketches that I have made on paper before, I tried to copy my idea and render it into a 3d model in Rhino 7. I first started by drawing an equilateral triangle as construction lines to guide my designing. In essence, the model consists of a sphere connected three equally spaced tubes. You can find a copy of the file above.

Step 2: 3D Printing

I transferred the file Cura LulzBot to make the itinerary file, then I loaded it in the 3d printer. It took 6 hours and 7 minutes.

Step 3: Post-processing

Using pliers and sanding paper, I removed the excess material.

Step 4: Final Result

You can watch the final result after sanding and post-processing.
