Introduction: [3D Printed] Self Watering Succulent Planter

This 3D printed planter was made in Tinkercad and is designed for small succulent plants. The planter has a piece of string to act as a straw for the plant to absorb water from the bottom reservoir. The planter takes about 5 hours to print and is printed all in one piece.


  • 3D Printer w/ filament
  • 3" of absorbent string/yarn/twine
  • Needle nose pliers
  • A toothpick or small screw driver
  • Small bowl
  • Sandpaper (optional)

Step 1: Download the .stl File

Download the .stl file called "Self Watering Succulent Planter". Here is the Tinkercad page for anyone who wishes to edit or change the design.

Step 2: Print the Container

As said, it takes roughly 5 hours to print, this can change depending on the settings you use. I used medium settings, normal speed, and a layer height of 0.3mm and it took about 5 hours. [Do not Forget to Use Supports]

After printing the planter, you will need to use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the inner supports. this is where you would sand down the exterior of the container.

Step 3: Reinforcing the Water Reservoir

The 3mm wide bottom of the container doesn't do a very good job at holding the water (That may not always be the case, it was for mine). A great way to prevent water from leaking out of the container is to put the planter in a small bowl that can fit the sides of the container within it.

Step 4: Adding the Water "Wick"

Use 3 inches of an absorbent string, twine, or yarn. Use the toothpick (or in my case a small screw driver) to help guide and push the string through one of the holes at the bottom of the potting area. You may be able to use the needle nose pliers to pull the string through, do this until about 2 inches of the string is through the hole and the remaining inch is in the potting area.

Step 5: Adding a Plant of Your Choice

I would recommend you use this planter with a succulent, or another plant that has small roots.
