Introduction: Air Pollution Monitoring System

About: Technomentis is a venture to foster innovation and hands on learning for youngsters at formative ages. We explore, create, design, tinker and innovate at Explorato - our makers space.

Abstract:

Pollution levels in the cites are rising at an alarming rate. Emission of harmful gases from the vehicles, industries, etc. largely pollutes the environment. This project is aimed at showing the live pollution levels across different locations in a city and thus bringing awareness to the public. Gas sensors are installed in different locations and their data are shown on a web server which can be accessed by the public.

Step 1: Components Required:

  1. Intel Galileo x 1
  2. USB Cable x 1
  3. Power Cable x 1
  4. Gas Sensor(MQ2) x 4
  5. Small breadboard x 1
  6. Router (For IoT) x 1
  7. Ethernet cable x 1
  8. Male to female connecting wires x 40
  9. Male to Male connecting wires x 40

Step 2: Connecting Gas Sensor to Intel Galileo

Gas sensor(MQ2)

The MQ-2 is a flammable gas and smoke sensor detects the concentrations of combustible gas in the air and outputs its reading as an Analog voltage. The sensor can measure concentrations of flammable gas of 300 to 10,000 ppm. The MQ-2 gas sensor is sensitive to LPG, i-butane, propane, methane, alcohol, Hydrogen and smoke. They are used in gas leakage detecting equipment and in portable gas detectors.

The voltage that the sensor outputs changes accordingly to the smoke/gas level that exists in the atmosphere. The sensor outputs a voltage that is proportional to the concentration of smoke/gas. In other words, the relationship between voltage and gas concentration is the following:

• The greater the gas concentration, the greater the output voltage

• The lower the gas concentration, the lower the output voltage

Circuit Connections:

  1. Connect the A0 pin of the Gas Sensor 1 to the Analog pin A0 on the Intel Galileo using male to female connecting wire.
  2. Connect the A0 pin of the Gas Sensor 2 to the Analog pin A1 on the Intel Galileo using male to female connecting wire.
  3. Connect the A0 pin of the Gas Sensor 3 to the Analog pin A2 on the Intel Galileo using male to female connecting wire.
  4. Connect the A0 pin of the Gas Sensor 4 to the Analog pin A3 on the Intel Galileo using male to female connecting wire.
  5. Take 4 male to female wire, connect 1 terminal of all the 4 wire where you connected 5v pin of the Intel Galileo on the breadboard and the other terminal of all the 4 wire to the Vcc pin of all the 4 Gas Sensor.
  6. Take 4 male to female wire, connect 1 terminal of all the 4 wire where you connected GND pin of the Intel Galileo on the breadboard and the other terminal of all the 4 wire to the GND pin of all the 4 Gas Sensor.

Step 3: Upload the Arduino Sketch

Step 4: The Final Steps

  1. Ensure that all the connections are checked again.
  2. Connect the Ethernet cable from the router to the Ethernet port of Intel Galileo.
  3. Power up Intel Galileo by plugging in the power cord
  4. Connect the USB data cable from the computer to the ‘USB Client Port’ of the Intel Galileo
  5. Upload the sketch.
  6. Now connect a phone/laptop to the router via WiFi or LAN.
  7. Open a browser and enter the static IP address typed in the sketch.

Now, the webpage can be seen on any browser on phone/Laptop.
