Les voy a contar acerca de un juguete gratis que solíamos hacer cuando yo era niño. Vivíamos en un granja, lo cual tiene sus lados muy lindos, pero también sus problemas. Las noches de invierno son laaargaaas, y los chicos deben tener en qué entretenerse porque si no, se ponen difíciles. No teníamos TV, ni internet, ni cine, ni videos, ni MP3, ni siquiera un fonógrafo. Pero aunque tú no lo creas, jamás nos aburríamos. Siempre había algo para jugar. Y el súper simple juguete que detallo a continuación era uno de los que más frecuentemente usábamos, experimentando sonidos nuevos.

¡Y en estéreo de alta fidelidad, que aún no se había inventado!


I will tell you about a free toy we used to do when I was a child. We lived on a farm, which has its very cute side, but also its problems. Winter nights are loooooong, and the kids should have to amuse themselves because if not, they were heavy. We had no TV, no Internet, no movies, no videos or MP3 or even a phonograph. But even if you don't believe it, we never got bored. There was always something to play. And the super simple toy outlined below was one of the most frequently used, experiencing new sounds.

And in high-fidelity stereo, which had not been invented yet!

STEP 1: Materials

Buscábamos un trozo de hilo de atar paquetes, de aproximadamente un metro de largo. Eso era fácil, porque mi mamá tenía un cajón en el comedor, donde guardaba papeles, hilos, corchos, y toda cosa que podría haber tirado a la basura pero que, sabiendo que una fuerte lluvia nos podría aislar por varios días, ella conservaba para cualquier necesidad. Al hilo le hacíamos un ojal pequeño en cada extremo, a modo de argolla para lazo. Luego pasábamos el cuerpo del hilo por dentro del ojal, para que metiendo el dedo dentro del lazo, este quedara apretado.

Una vez con el hilo convenientemente acondicionado, agarrábamos una cuchara o un tenedor, de esos pesados de alpaca que se usaban antes, pero hoy día podemos arreglarnos muy bien con uno de acero inoxidable. Eso sí, debe ser totalmente metálico, no debe tener mango de madera ni de plástico. Incluso, si tiene mango metálico, este debe ser una sola pieza con el resto, no debe estar unido con remaches.

Atábamos el hilo al medio de la cuchara o tenedor, de manera que quedase colgando más o menos balanceado.


We wanted a piece of yarn to tie bundles, of about a meter long. STEP 2: Hearing (escuchando)

Con la cuchara (o tenedor) colgada del centro del hilo, metíamos la punta de los dedos índice dentro de los lazos, y dejábamos la cuchara balanceándose libremente. Luego metíamos la punta de los índices en los oídos, y moviendo el cuerpo hacíamos que la cuchara golpease contra el borde de una silla, contra la pared o cualquier otra cosa dura.

¡Maravilloso! Se escuchaban una campanas como jamás habíamos oído, y nos quedábamos boquiabiertos. OJO, los dedos no deben estar mojados, porque podrías hacerte daño.


With the spoon (or fork) hanging from the center of the wire, we put the tip of the index fingers inside the lassos, and left the spoon swinging freely. Then put the tip of the index in the ears, and moving the body hit  the spoon on the edge of a chair, the wall or anything else hard.

Wonderful! We could hear a bell like we had never heard, and were left speechless. WARNING, fingers should not be wet, because you could hurt yourself.

STEP 3: The Best Part (la Mejor Parte)

No termina ahí la diversión; así sería un poco aburrido. Lo interesante es probar diferentes objetos. Verás que los objetos grandes dan sonidos más graves, con excepciones debidas a la forma. Puedes probar con trozos de caño, con herramientas, trozos de chapa, incluso madera dura y plástico. Te sorprenderá la variedad y profundidad de sonidos que puedes descubrir con este simple juguete.

Prueba lo siguiente:

¿Qué ocurre si el hilo es más largo o más corto?

¿Y si le hacemos un nudo que forme una Y?

¿Y si en vez de hilo usamos un alambre?

¿Y si usamos banditas de goma? (tendremos que encadenarlas entre sí para obtener la longitud suficiente)

¿Y si..? 

Usa tu imaginación.


Fun does not end there, so would be a bit boring. The interesting thing is to test different things. You will see that large objects bring more bass sounds, with exceptions due to the form. You can try with pieces of pipe, tools, pieces of metal, even hardwood and plastic. You'll be surprised by the variety and depth of sounds you can find with this simple toy.

What if the string is longer or shorter?

What if we make it a knot to form a Y?

What if we used wire instead of yarn?

What if we use rubber bands? (we will have to string them together for long enough)

This is really cool. Just tried it with an old silver fork and it worked wonderfully. The sound reminds me of a tuning fork and my wife said it sounded like a meditation bell to her. Thank you for sharing!

Wet fingers work like a plunger, and this affects the eardrum. Dry fingers don't have that problem.

Yes. Obviously, little childs will not be able to hold heavy things, but an adult yes can do it. You could try each thing and select those better for them.

Muy interesante! La primera vez que escuche estreo en 1957. Se necesitaban dos radios sintonizados a dos estaciones. Una estacion jugo canal izquierdo, el otro canal, a la derecha.

Yo uso el traductor de Microsoft Word, tambien traductor de Google.
Entonces, seleccionar la traduccion que aparece mejor.
Sin embargo, me gustari¬a mucho mas alcanzar fluidez en castellano.
No estoy seguro de que el uso de un traductor ayuda para aprender un idioma. Es como usar una calculadora para saber como multiplicar y dividir.

Very interesting! The first time I heard stereo in 1957. It required two radios tuned to two stations. A station played left channel, the other channel, right.

I use Microsoft Word translator, Google translator too.
Then, I select the translation that appears better.
However, I would much rather achieve fluency in Castilian.
I'm not sure that using a translator helps in learning a language. It's like using a calculator to learn how multipy and divide.

Bill, si no tienes un profesor a quien consultar, el uso de un traductor automático para aprender un idioma es no solo útil sino indispensable.

Escuché alguna vez que se habían hecho experimentos de transmisión de música estéreo en AM, repartiendo ambos canales entre dos emisoras. Pero la idea no prosperó por las dificultades obvias tanto del lado de la transmisión como de la recepción. Afortunadamente la FM resolvió el problema.
