Introduction: Architectural Model 002

Each of these models is a separate train of thought. A way of shaping physical and, or mental constructs using ordering devises like hierarchy, rhythm, and datum. Each of them represents a way of logically organizing information.

I modeled this in the computer, then built a physical model of it out of foam core and chip board.

The checker board pattern, as a symbol, takes on different meanings in different cultures. It has been described to me as if the white portions represent consciousness and the black portions represent unconsciousness. I was told that we inhabit different spaces on the board as we switch from one state of mind to the other. That, in fact, our return to consciousness every morning places us in a surprisingly different place than yesterday and that this relocation is sporadic and non linear.

I decided to use this means of organizing space as a premise, but then create degrees of separation between the furthest plane and the closest so as to not emphasize the contrast between the grid-dominant separation between adjacent surfaces.

I ultimately decided to render the model in white because I liked the shadows that it casts. I think that there is something visually dynamic about it; a certain rhythmic cadence. The movement it suggests reminds me of the equalization graphs that result when digitally measuring different frequencies of a piece of music on the computer. Only, if instead of a two dimensional graph, it were a field or landscape.

This one has been in the back of my mind for a while, but it wasn't until I was inspired by photos of the Serpentine Pavilion designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group that it made its way in to being.

I hope you enjoy!
