Introduction: Arduino-Based Mini Seismograph: Earthquake Awareness in Education- OPENFAB-EYUBOGLU

Supplies

Materials Needed

  1. Arduino Uno
  2. KY-002 Vibration Sensor
  3. LED (for earthquake alert)
  4. 220 Ohm resistor
  5. Breadboard and jumper wires
  6. USB cable
  7. Computer (with Arduino IDE installed)

Step 1:

Setting Up the Circuit

  1. Connect the VCC pin of the KY-002 sensor to the 5V pin on the Arduino.
  2. Connect the GND pin to the Arduino’s GND.
  3. Connect the DO pin to digital pin 2 on the Arduino.
  4. Connect the LED, with a 220 Ohm resistor, to digital pin 13 on the Arduino.

Step 2:

Testing

  1. Gently shake the sensor or provide vibrations to check if the LED lights up.
  2. Observe the vibration messages appearing on the Serial Monitor.

Step 3:

Educational Use

  1. Conduct classroom earthquake simulations using the mini seismograph.
  2. Students can observe vibrations and collect data on earthquake intensity.
  3. The project provides a safe environment for building earthquake awareness and can be integrated into STEM lessons.

Step 4:

Maintenance and Development

  1. Ensure all wiring is secure.
  2. Protect the Arduino and sensor from damage by using a safe platform.
  3. In the future, you can add a screen or data logging system to record sensor readings.
