Arts & Crafts Inspired Living Room Cabinets

Introduction: Arts & Crafts Inspired Living Room Cabinets

About: I've been an experimental high-energy physicist for 20 years (since I started graduate school in 1988). I got my BS in physics from UCLA, my Ph.D. at Caltech, and did a post-doc at UBC before moving to SLAC. …

Several years ago, my wife and I decided to redecorate our living room. When we removed the dreadful mirrored tiles over the fireplace (thanks, previous owner!) we discovered that the wall (shared with the garage, water heater, and furnace) didn't have any drywall or insulation, just fake wood panelling, which had been put up before the facade. ....So the panelling comes down, which means the fireplace is dismantled, and redecoration turns into remodelling.

We are both big fans of the American Arts and Crafts movement, so I designed a set of cabinetry to go around the fireplace and have a "built in" look. We ordered the cabinets from Skog, through Hoot Judkins, and had them do the installation.

You said you designed the cabinetry? That is the style I'm wanting for my room as well. Reminds me of the first home DH and I lived in when we first got married. The room has a fireplace and is unofficially our "library". I'd love to have built-ins along the arts-and-crafts line. Someday..... You did a great job. Love how it turned out!

Thank you very much! Technically, my wife and I designed the cabinetry together, trying out different things until we agreed. Same with the fireplace tile. All the drawings up there were done using |xfig|, a very simple 2D drawing program for Unix. I don't have the technical skill or equipment to actually build something this complex, so we had them made by a company called Skog down in Irvine.

Thank you! I usually use |xfig|, because it's part of the standard Linux distribution, and really simple. I just installed Google's SketchUp, but I'll give AS3D a try.

Your welcome! I'm not a designer, but I love virtual designing things (Ex: Roller Coaster Tycoon games). But on Archtitecht Studios, it's sort of hard for me to take it seriously. I either get bored or fool around (like making 100's of rooms, each only about sq. inches LOL!). But yeah, have fun with it if your bored.
