Last fall, lightning struck a tree during a rain storm and it toppled over in our yard. Huge pine. We pulled out a few nice chunks for stools or tables down at the fire pit and cut up the rest for firewood.

One piece, near where the lightning struck it, was all splintery. I pulled that aside thinking it had character.

First, we tried to cut the bottom as level and even as possible. Next, I sanded it and hosed it off with water to remove as much dust and dirt as possible.

Step 1:

I sliced off the points. They will be used before I'm done.

Step 2:

I sanded it all around, then stained it with a Minwax in dark pecan. Finished with a satin polyurethane spray.

Step 3:

After dry, I added glass top and used E6000 to attach glass to base and
points to glass. It looks a bit like the points of wood come through the glass. I'll be honest, getting this thing level on the bottom and for the glass top was a pain.
