Introduction: Axis Fur Dog Vest

This winter I decided i wanted to try and make a dog vest out of a real axis deer fur I have had for a while. This was the first thing I have ever sewn. After watching a few youtube videos, It seemed rather easy. So, I headed to my local walmart and picked up my supplies.

Singer quick stitch plus sewing machine. $20

Some grey and white (knit) material for the inner liner of vest I had scissors already

Sewing machine had thread.

Two wooden buttons (Walmart)

and two stretchy Pony tail things I stole from my wife.

Step 1: Cutting Out Fur

I went online and looked at different patterns people used to make dog vest and thought this pattern would be the easiest for my first time sewing. I used a marker to draw out the pattern on inside of fur, then cut it with my scissors.

Step 2: Cutting Out Inner Liner

I wanted to make the vest where it would it would serve its purpose and keep my dog warm. So i decided it needed a inner liner with the white knit material in between the grey material and fur. To work as insulation. I cut out my outer liner (grey) pattern.

Step 3: Cutting Inner White Insulation

I placed my grey cut inner liner on top of my white insulation material and cut the white material to match my grey liner.

Step 4: Sewing

I was very impressed with the singer sewing machine. It was cheap and really did its job. All i had to do was follow the instructions on feeding the thread thru several holes and the needle. Raise the needle. And sew.

I put the two liners together and sewed about 1/2" all the way around the edge until i got about 6" from where i started and left a 6" opening in the end.

Step 5: Turning the Liner Inside Out

I turned the liner inside out thru the 6" opening to expose the sewn edge and hide all the ugly. I then, folded the two liners egde in, where the 6" opening was. And sewed it together to close the hole.

Step 6: Sewing Liner to Fur

I then had my liner and my fur. I placed the liner inside of the the fur and sewed it together.

Step 7: Cut Holes and Place Buttons

I then used my scissors to cut holes in fur for my buttons. I used the stretchy pony tails on one side. and the buttons on the opposite side. I looped the pony tails thru the holes to hold in place. The buttons were held in by a few small pieces i cut from the grey material. I tied the buttons to the fur. Now i could stretch the pony tails around the buttons to hold the vest on to my doggy.

It was a fun easy first time sewing project. And, i think my doggy looks great in her vest. How many dogs can you say you have seen with a fur coat vest???
