Introduction: Bannock

Bannock is a simple indigenous food that can be cooked on a pan or over an open fire.

Step 1: Mix Ingredients

The ingredients are:

2 cups of flour

1/3 cup of brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons of baking powder

Mix them together. If you're going to take it camping or use it sometime in the future or cook it over a campfire, put all the ingredients in a Ziplock bag. Otherwise use a bowl.

Step 2: Add Water

Add water until it is the consistency of soft Play doh.

Step 3: Fry and Serve

If you're using a frying pan, spread it out like a pancake and cook it until the inside is done. It's pretty tasteless by itself so spread some jam or honey on it to add flavour.

Step 4: Cook on a Stick

We take the dry ingredients along camping because it keeps a long, long time and you just have to add water. Cooking it over a campfire takes a long time but we really enjoy it.

Find a stick that is about the width of a ruler and scrape the bark of off the last 12 inches (30 cm). Add water to your bannock mix. Grab a handful of the dough and, starting at the top, turn the stick and move your hand down so that it forms a relatively even spiral layer of dough on the stick. Cook until the inside is done.
