This will be a tutorial on how to make a simple Minecraft pickaxe using solid works. here is picture of my finished product, I made it using a 3D printer. It definitely isn't the cleanest print but it doesn't look half bad.

What did you make?

I made a pickaxe key chain based on a tool from one of favorite games Minecraft. it was a project for my high school 3D Rapid Prototyping class. We had to design an object on solid works that had to printable and create an inscrutable that would be accepted into a Digital Fabrication contest.

How did you make it?

I designed it using solid works using an image of the tool as a reference. I then printed it using one of the class's 3D printers .

It was designed in the classroom for my Rapid Prototyping class. It was printed using the classes one of the class's 3D printers.

What did you learn?

i learned about the limitations of a 3D printer and the possible complexities of a seemingly simple design. doing this allowed me to learn how to properly operate my school's 3D printers.

Step 1: Step 1

step 1. open a sketch on the front plane and starting on the origin get the rough shape of the Minecraft pickaxe using the rectangle tool. I suggest using a Picture from Google images as a reference.

Step 2. Now you want to smart dimension based on what size you want for each pixel i went with 5mm by 5mm

Step 3: Step 3

Step 3. now using the Trim Entities tool set it to trim to closest and remove excess lines until it looks like my example.

Step 4: Step 4

Step 4. now use the Extrude Boss/Base tool and select your sketch and select blind in direction 1 and set the distance to that of your pixels which was 5mm for me.

Step 5: Step 5

Step 5. now open a sketch on the front of your pickaxe and draw a circle near the bottom of it. Now smart dimension the circle to have a 3mm diameter and smart dimension it to your desired location.

step 6. now use the Extrude Cut tool and select the circle you drew and select through all in direction 1.
