Introduction: Batarang From Scrap Metal

About: Student of Geology and Geographic Information Systems who enjoys hardware hacking and creating fun projects for friends, family, and self. Python / C / JAVA

I had some scrap metal sitting around my dorm last spring, so I decided to make a batarang. It didn't turn out as well as I hoped, so I attempted another over the summer! Here they are!

Step 1: Supplies

For this project I used as follows:

Tools:

Clamps

Dremel

Bucket of water

Heat source

Marker/ Pencil

Parts:

Scrap metal big enough for logo

Step 2: First Go Around

First I started with a piece of scrap metal. The piece used here was to thin and bent easy, so go for a thicker piece.

Trace the Batman logo of your choosing onto the metal, then cut it out. I used a Dremel 4000 and the "Batman Begins" logo.

As seen in my 3rd picture, I attempted to heat up the metal some. I knew this wouldn't really heat treat the metal, but it did give it a nice burnt look to it.

This first attempt is now a magnet on my fridge.

Step 3: Thicker Metal

For my second attempt, I started with a thicker piece of metal; a scrap steel out of an old tv set.

First, print out a template to trace. Then trace on the logo.

I then used a pencil to make rough cut lines.

Step 4: Cut It Out!

After clamping to a base, I used the cutting tip on my dremel to cut out the rough shape.

Then grind it down some with a grinding tip. If you have a bench top grinder, that would be a much better tool to use.

Step 5: Heat Treatment (Kinda)

I had no real way to heat treat the steel, so I just used a ceramic grill to find out what would happen! I don't think it made the steel any stronger, but I did give it a cool pattern.

Step 6: Final Product

Thats it! Try your best not to hurt anyone, but styrofoam dummies make great targets!
