Blue Moon Ice Cream

Intro: Blue Moon Ice Cream

When I was growing up in Wisconsin, Blue Moon was my favorite ice cream flavor. Smurf blue, with a taste resembling Fruit Loops, I had all but forgotten about it until I saw it at a local soda fountain. Of course, I had to have a taste. Holy Cow! I still love it! So, I had to figure out how to make it.

After a some Googling and a little experimentation, this is my final result. Whether you enjoyed Blue Moon as a child, or you’ve never heard of it, you are going to love this rendition.

STEP 1: Ingredients

2 eggs
½ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon raspberry extract
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1 packet of Duncan Hines® Frosting Creations™ Cotton Candy Flavor Mix (or sub 1 tablespoon vanilla pudding mix)
1/2 teaspoon blue food coloring
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream

STEP 2: Method

In a small bowl, beat together the eggs and the sugar with a hand mixer until thickened and lemon colored, about 2 minutes. Stir in the vanilla, raspberry, and lemon extracts, the flavor mix, and the food coloring; set aside.

Place the milk and the cream in a medium sized saucepan. Heat over medium/low heat until the mixture just comes to a simmer. Slowly whisk the egg mixture into the hot cream and continue to heat until it again comes to a simmer, whisking constantly. Reduce the heat and simmer for another two minutes. Remove from heat and chill for at least 2 hours or overnight.

Pour the chilled cream into an ice cream maker and churn according to directions, about 30 minutes.  If a firmer consistency is desired, transfer the ice cream into an airtight container and freeze for several hours.

STEP 3: Enjoy!

So..this post is crazy old but I've since had my own taste bud sensation while making a smoothie. It was simple, I wanted something sweet but sorta healthy so I reached for the frozen blueberries, Turkey Hill ALL NATURAL Vanilla Bean ice cream..ALL NATURAL is important, as it only has 4 ingredients! add some vanilla almond milk and put it all in my nutri-bullet.. let it mix until it was just thicker than a malt shake. The color wasn't so remarkable, but when that spoon hit my mouth, my mind went all the way back to 1982 Kenosha , WI Little Boy Blue ice cream shop. It was THAT flavor! Bluemoon ice cream all day! It was instant! I would spend my allowance...all of $.75 on one pint of Blue Moon Ice cream..everyday! I mean, I appreciate all your recipes, but this was quick, much healthier, and taste wise, spot on!
Is it instance putting you use or cooking kind..did you find you like the pudding better than the Duncan Hines frosting creations Cotten candy ..can't wait to try it going to use goat milk and cream ..seeing we have milking goats ..I have the Cotten candy flavor so will try this first tell I find out if it is cooked or instance putting.. Thanks for the great recipe..
Love it! Tried it at home and my whole family enjoyed it! I remember growing up in Wisconsin sitting by the lake and eating this with my siblings. Brings back the memories! I love the pictures too! Blue Moon Icecream Rocks!
How did I not see this before???!!! This is awesome! I think I love you.

(why, yes, I did grow up in Wisconsin)

maybe we should make an instructables group to test and refine the flavor combinations and compare them to the different brands that make blue moon. My favorite was always Chocolate Shoppe.
Rated five stars!, at first i believed they were tennis balls! What an nice color, i'm wishing to taste it right now! The flavor surely is from another planet :p
Thank you SOO much for posting this recipe, have lived very far away from Wisconsin for a very long time and have missed Blue Moon ever since, and scoured the internet several times over looking for anything remotely resembling a recipe for this! can't wait to try it out!
Well.....

So I have no resource to get the cotton candy flavor mix locally, but used the vanilla pudding mix instead. I also used closer to half as much blue coloring as the recipe said and turned out just right for me/ what i remember of the color.

The downside is that while the flavor is quite good and reminiscent of the brand I usually ate, it is missing something, not quite fruitloop-y enough (maybe needs orange flavor as well) and without the nutty flavor (think almond) that many of them are actually based on.

That said, this was a fantastic excuse to have a couple of beers and shake the demons out of a bag of salt and quickly melting ice and is a perfect beginning to my future experiments in Blue Moon Mad Science.

All Told: It still made a delicious batch of homemade ice-cream, fun flavor, and about 1/3rd of the way to a big tub of homemade Superman.

So again, thank you for your experiments enabling me to make mine :D
Thanks for letting me know how this turned out for you! You are absolutely right about the amount of food coloring. I just made this again...this time with the pudding mix...and the 1/2 teaspoon was correct. I will change that right now. :) I also increased the pudding mix to 3 tablespoons. Next time, I may try a bit of orange and/or almond extract to see what transpires. In the mean time, keep me posted on your quest for homemade Superman. I've never had it, but it sounds awesome!
This is probably the funnest ice cream I've ever seen. Wish we had it here on the west coast. Oh wait...I can make it with your amazing instructions :)
ooooh I almost missed this one! sounds really super yummy!!!
doesn't the lemon curdle the milk?
Well, it's lemon extract ...but, no, I didn't have a problem with curdling. That said, it's important not to let the cream mixture come to a full boil or the eggs will curdle.
The color is gorgeous! I grew up in Iowa and also remember this flavor a a kid!
Thank you! Yes, this is really a Midwestern treat, isn't it? I guess we can share it with others, though. ;-)
Haven't had this type of ice cream in a long time and that color looks beautiful to eat!
Thanks, Penolopy. I hadn't had it since I was a child...it was still good! :)
Beautiful picture!
