Intro: Bowl of Worms Anyone?

Create tasty, edible worms. This recipe is simple and great for Halloween, April Fool's, or anytime you feel like snacking on wormy goodness! If you can make jello, then you can make these cool looking worms.

Ingredients
2 packs (3 oz) Raspberry jello
1 pkg unflavored gelatin (for extra firmness)
3/4 cup whipping cream
3 cups boiling water
15 drops green food coloring
100 flexible straws (or enough to fill your container)
Tall container (1 quart or 1 liter carton of milk)

Directions
1) Combine gelatin in bowl and add boiling water.

2) Let it cool to lukewarm and then add the whipping cream and 15 drops green food coloring.

3) Gather your straws (don't forget to flex them out) and put them in the container. It's important that the straws have a tight fit so the jello stays in the straws. For this reason, a 1 liter carton may be better; you will probably get longer worms since there is a tighter fit. If you have a bigger container, a rubber band around the straws is helpful. Or you could just add more straws to fill the container.

4) Add the gelatin mixture to the straw-filled container and let it set until firm.

5) There are multiple ways you can remove the worms from the straws. You can roll a rolling pin over the straws and squeeze them out or you can hold the straws over warm water. The worms will slip right out.

And voila! Jello worms are served.

Those look good, however a number of my friends are vegetarian so I would have to try making them with agar agar rather than gelatine based jelly.

If your vegetarian friends think that they are worms,
then they will never eat them as worms are meat.

I made these for my preschool class, I put them in a bowl of milo and gave the kids a paddle pop stick to 'dig for worms'. Some wouldn't touch it but most loved it and when I told them they could eat them, well they loved them even more

I tried it, and didn't get it to work at all. I had the straws in a nice tight can, and I put some shortening in the bottom to try to plug the ends, because I couldn't see how the jello would stay in the vertical straws. I would watch a straw fill to the top as I poured it in, then watch it drain right out the bottom. How do you get them to stay filled?

Luckily my brain mold was nearby, so it wasn't a total waste.

When I made them, I ran the straws under warm water for a few seconds and then pinched and pushed from one end and it worked great.

Wow, I had a tremendous hard time figuring out how to pour the liquid into the straws. The liquid just kept coming out of the bottom and filling up my container. I even trying saran wrap on the bottom with a rubber band tight around it. I finally just laid all the straws in a rectangular container and put the straws in there. How did any of you get this to work by setting the jello vertically?! Sure hope they harden. I see some comments below that say they haven't set well for them.

Don't waste your time or money on the ingredients. It doesn't work! However, someone commented that they used the whole box of gelatin, instead of the one envelope, as the recipe states. The worms would not come out of the straws, and when I eventually pinched the top of the straws to push the worms out, we could not pick up the worms without them breaking. Cannot post a positive comment about this "recipe". A waste of money and a huge disappointment.

Quick question... how long do they take to set? Do they set better in the cold or just leave at room temperature? TIA!!!

I would recommend making them the night before so that they have time to set though the night in the fridge. They will not set at room temperature.

I did these last year and they turned out great! They take much longer to set than it says so I made them the day before and they set through the night. I used red jello mixed with just a touch of blue so that they would look discolored. I also used a little bit more of the cream so that it would look mottled. The only problem with using the straws is that is is VERY difficult to get them out. My brother and I took turns holding pliers on one end of the straws and using chopsticks to squeeze the jello out. I highly reccomend doing this if you are not afraid to work!.
