Introduction: Broken Axe Handle Field Repair

Over the years I've seen my dad breaking alot of axe handles chopping firewood. Living in the country there isn't always a hardware store nearby, so he would do a quick fix. Usually they would last for a few more seasons, Well, now that it's my responsibility. I thought I'd go get my very own axe. $25 at the hardware store, can't go wrong! It's done me good, chopping wood for about three seasons now. Today was a bit cold and it was having a bad day, I hit the edge of the block and snap! I was left with a handle and the axe in the wood. So enough about my story, here's how I fixed it.

Step 1: Materials

  • drill and a drill bit
  • tape (I used electrical tape)
  • screws and a screwdriver
  • rope
  • broken axe

Step 2: Holding It in Place

Now you have to try to align the splinters back in place so its straight. Once you have done this its time to put a light wrap of tape around the wound so it stays in place while you pre drill your holes.

Step 3: Drilling the Holes

All I could find for screws were these 1" screws that were fairly wide. So I used a 1/8" bit to make my holes, don't be too picky where you put them. It doesn't matter too much because the rope will give it the strength.

Step 4: Screw the Screws!

You know the drill! Time to start twisting.

Step 5: Wrap the Rope

Well this is a bit tricky and I apologize for not taking a picture of the roping process but I don't have 3 hands...YET! I used a screw to hold one end of the rope, then turned the rope around the handle as tight as I could. Then I came back around and finished by tying a loop around the end and knotting it. Finally I wrapped a good amount of tape around the rope and a chopping I went.

It really works good! doesn't show any signs of coming loose or bending. as a bonus I won't loose it in the bush with the red tape.
