Introduction: Bullets to Buttons
I first thought of making "Bullet Buttons" a while ago. When I researched how to make them I was surprised to find no one else had this idea. So I decided to spice up one of my boring shirts with some brass ammo!!
Supplies
- Brass bullet shells (I used 30-06 and 270)
- Shirt
- Drill
- Grinder
- 1/16 Drill Bit
- Dremel
- Cone Grinding Stone
- Needle
- Yellow Thread
Step 1: Make 'em Shiny!
I used 220 grit to shine the ends. It's easiest to shine them by spinning against the sandpaper.
Step 2: Grind Off the Heads
Grind the head off the shell using the thinnest grinding wheel you can. I did this by putting it in a drill
(preferably a drill press) then ground them off while the drill was spinning for an even cut. If it isn't thin enough you might need to do some more grinding.
Step 3: Drill the Holes
I used a 5/64 drill bit. A 1/16 would be better as long as you can keep from breaking the bit:) Using a Dremel and a 3/16 cone grinding stone I rounded out the holes. If you don't, the sharp edges will cut through the thread.
Step 4: Sewing Time!
Yellow thread seemed to match the best. Make sure you sew them on tight with lots of thread.
